Sonic X Shadow Generations selling over a million units isn't too surprising, considering how it was one of the most anticipated releases for Sonic the Hedgehog fans in 2024. While it includes a remaster of 2011's Sonic Generations, there is also a campaign starring Shadow the Hedgehog, where he faces off against Black Doom and other enemies from his past. Shadow being the protagonist of his own journey adjacent to Sonic Generations gave the remaster a lot of attention it otherwise likely wouldn't have gotten.
This success was reflected in how Sonic X Shadow Generations was a massive hit on launch day, not only in terms of critical reception, but also its sales. Following its three-day early access period, Sega revealed that Sonic X Shadow Generations had already managed to sell 1 million copies on the day of its release. This is a major sales milestone, as it makes Sonic X Shadow Generations one of the fastest-selling games in the franchise, even surpassing the likes of Sonic Frontiers. Sega recently revealed an updated figure of the game's sales a month after its initial launch.
Sonic X Shadow Generations Movie DLC Pack Price Revealed
A seemingly premature listing reveals the price tag for Sonic X Shadow Generations' upcoming movie DLC featuring Keanu Reeves.
In a recent post from the official Sega Southeast Asia (SEA) Facebook page, the account revealed that Sonic X Shadow Generations has sold over 1.5 million units to date across the Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles. For reference, the original Sonic Generations managed to sell 1.85 million copies by the end of May 2012, which means that the remaster is already encroaching upon the original's lifetime sales within the span of a month.
Sonic X Shadow Generations Has Sold 1.5 Million Units a Month After Launch
Currently, Sonic Frontiers holds the title of best-selling 3D Sonic game, which sold 3.5 million units by the end of April 2023. Even other critically acclaimed Sonic games like Sonic Colors and the original Sonic Generations didn't get close to those numbers. Sonic Heroes previously held the milestone title, having managed to sell 3.41 million copies by the end of 2007. As such, Sonic X Shadow Generations could likely be the next best-selling and critically acclaimed 3D Sonic game.
Sega SEA noted that the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation versions of Sonic X Shadow Generations are currently on sale for Black Friday, being 40% off of their normal price, with other major titles like Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance and Metaphor: ReFantazio seeing a similar price cut. Fans can get the normally $50 game for $30 during Black Friday, which is a major steal for Sonic X Shadow Generations, considering that it just released only a month ago. Historically, sales of Sonic games do increase substantially during the holiday season, so this sale will likely be for its benefit.
