Summary
- Sonic X Shadow Generations won't have a Switch 2 upgrade path.
- Other cross-gen games offer upgrade paths, which makes this decision disappointing.
- Sonic X Shadow Generations offers improved graphics on Switch 2 compared to the Switch 1 original.
It's been confirmed that there will be no upgrade path for Switch 1 owners looking to get the Switch 2 version of Sonic X Shadow Generations. Sonic X Shadow Generations is a remaster of 2011 Sonic Generations, but with brand-new story content starring Shadow the Hedgehog added to the mix. Sonic X Shadow Generations was well-received by fans and critics alike, and so it's really a no-brainer to bring the game to the Nintendo Switch 2.
Sonic X Shadow Generations was one of the first games announced for the Nintendo Switch 2. At the time, it wasn't clear if Sonic X Shadow Generations would be available for the Switch 2 at launch, but that has since been clarified. Sega has confirmed that Sonic X Shadow Generations will be a Switch 2 launch title, with the 3D platformer getting a native release on Nintendo's next-generation home console/handheld hybrid as soon as it releases on June 5.
Sonic X Shadow Generations May Be Hiding a Secret in Plain Sight
The stages featured in Shadow's side of Sonic X Shadow Generations are rather interesting, but one of them may have more to it than fans think.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is more powerful than the original Switch and so its games are expected to run and look better on the platform. In the case of Sonic X Shadow Generations, it's been confirmed that the Switch 2 version will have better graphics when compared to its Switch 1 counterpart. Some Switch gamers that already own Sonic X Shadow Generations may want to check out the improved graphics on the Switch 2, but if so, they're going to have to buy the game all over again. Unfortunately, there will not be any kind of upgrade path for Sonic X Shadow Generations on Switch 2. Save data can be transferred from the Switch 1 version of the game to the Switch 2 version, but it can't be sent back.
Sonic X Shadow Generations Won't Have a Switch 2 Upgrade Path
This is disappointing, to say the least, especially since many other cross-gen games have offered upgrade paths, sometimes even free of charge. Nintendo itself is doing paid upgrades for some of its Switch 1 games, with Nintendo Switch 2 Edition releases coming for Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Super Mario Party Jamboree, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and Pokemon Legends: Z-A. The prices of these Switch 2 upgrades range from $10 - $20, but that's not even an option for those wanting to play Sonic X Shadow Generations natively on their Switch 2.
It's probable that the Switch 2 upgrades for Sonic X Shadow Generations are negligible, which makes going through the trouble of an upgrade path not necessarily worth the investment. Whatever the case may be, the good news is that the Switch 2 is backward compatible with the original Switch, so those that already own Sonic X Shadow Generations can still play the Switch 1 version on their new handheld.
