Summary

  • Sofalite is essential for upgrading weapons. Players need a Sofalite Upgrader to modify weapons.
  • Some weapons like the Katana and Firefighter Axe benefit greatly from Sofalite upgrades.
  • The Shotgun and Modern Axe are also valuable weapons, offering different advantages and upgrades in Sons of the Forest.

Sofalite is used to upgrade weapons in Sons of the Forest, and players can begin enhancing their inventory as soon as they start mining it. They will need a Sofalite Upgrader to make modifications to weapons, which can be crafted using the blueprint found in a cave near the southwest golf course. The Sofalite Upgrader requires four Golf Cart Batteries, three Turtle Shells, seven Stones, 11 Sticks, and three Wires. Sofalite itself, the raw material, is found inside most caves and can be mined using a Pickaxe.

Some weapons are exceptionally powerful when upgraded. If they are maxed out early in the game, they'll come in handy when taking out the hordes of Mutants and Cannibals. It's important to have a good selection of both firearms and melee weapons with a balance of short and long range to account for any eventuality. Here are a handful of must-have weapons that benefit from immediate upgrades in Sons of the Forest.

Endnight Games' Sons of the Forest is a game where survival is never guaranteed. What are the best weapons in the game?

4 Katana

An Overpowered Melee Weapon Essential For Late-Game Combat

Obtaining the Katana is a bit of a hassle, as it requires a Shovel. In order to get this, players will need a Zipline Rope Gun and a Rebreather. Once the Shovel is secured, it's possible to gain access to the Residential Bunker, located east of the island's biggest lake. The Katana can hack and slash smaller enemies with incredible ease, and even reduce Mutants and Cannibals to ribbons. It is capable of severing limbs, which significantly slows enemies down.

Many Sons of the Forest players consider the Katana to be the best melee weapon, especially when upgraded with Sofalite to increase damage output. It isn't realistically obtainable until late-game, as it would be too overpowered if players could get their hands on it straight away. Still, it's a melee weapon that will serve players well later on.

3 Firefighter Axe

The Most Powerful Axe In The Game

It's worth killing two birds with one stone on the way to finding the Katana, since the Firefighter Axe can be retrieved in Maintenance A. It must be dug up using the Shovel, but there are Cannibal camps on either side of the dig site, so it's imperative that players approach with extreme caution. The Firefighter Axe can be upgraded with six Sofalite, which will grant it the highest damage increase across all weapons in Sons of the Forest.

Generally, the Firefighter Axe deals the most damage, the Tactical Axe has the fastest swings, and the Modern Axe is an ideal blend that balances speed and damage. Aside from the Chainsaw, the Firefighter Axe is also the best tool for chopping down trees, so it's an all-round useful weapon for both combat and practicality.

2 Modern Axe

A Nostalgic Weapon That Never Lost Its Charm

In Sons of the Forest, the Modern Axe is a particularly nostalgic weapon, as it's one of the available tools in the game's predecessor, The Forest. The Modern Axe is located on the western side of the map near a campsite with three black tents and a stereo playing music. The Axe can be swiped from a corpse, and it's considered one of the best early-game weapons with high base damage and good block mechanics. Plus, it's fast and effortless when chopping down trees, just like the Firefighter Axe, but much easier to get.

When upgraded with six Sofalite, the Modern Axe gains a further damage increase. It still isn't enough to beat the Firefighter Axe, but for a weapon that's easier to find in the first few days, it's a steal.

1 Shotgun

A Must-Have Firearm For Taking Out Bigger Enemies

As one of the most powerful firearms in Sons of the Forest, the Shotgun can take out enemies with ease, especially when equipped with Buckshot. The Shovel is also necessary to retrieve the Shotgun, as well as the GPS Tracker. Players will need to locate markers on the map with exclamation points in them, specifically the one closest to the coast, and dig up a grave to secure the Shotgun.

When upgraded with Sofalite, the Shotgun sees a minor damage increase as well as gold plating. If players manage to bond with Virginia, she can be given the Shotgun and will use it in an active combat zone to save players in a pinch. If the Shotgun is also equipped with the Shotgun Rail, players can add a Laser Sight to pinpoint enemies more accurately.

Although they can't be upgraded in Sons of the Forest, there are some other weapons worth crafting or finding in the wild. These include the Crafted Spear, the Compound Bow, the Chainsaw, and the Stun Baton. Spears and Bows make for great long-range weapons, whereas a Stun baton can break up an ambush and buy a player some precious time to reload or flee an area. Finally, the Chainsaw is the most practical tool for chopping down trees and gathering supplies.
