Horror title Sons of the Forest has overtaken Bethesda Game Studios' highly anticipated RPG Starfield as Steam's most wishlisted game. It's easy to see why Starfield would be one of the most wanted game releases of 2023, even as Bethesda has yet to announce a release date for the game. That it would be overtaken by a much smaller indie horror game is a surprise, to say the least. But considering Steam's reputation as the home for virally successful indie games, perhaps it's less of a surprise than one might first think. It's more than understandable for Starfield to be at the top of Steam's most wishlisted games list. Between the Fallout and Elder Scrolls franchises, Bethesda Game Studios is one of the most successful video game development studios in the industry. If anything, Starfield's wishlists on Steam are expected to grow dramatically. That's because Starfield currently doesn't have a release date, with Bethesda Softworks choosing to wait until the game is as polished as possible before launch. That lack of a release date has left an opportunity for another highly anticipated Steam release to overtake Starfield in wishlists, though. Some might be surprised to hear the game that overtook Starfield is Sons of the Forest, a game some may never have even heard of. Yet excitement for the horror survival game is undeniable.
While the reasons for Sons of the Forest skyrocketing to the top of Steam's most-wishlisted list are multifaceted, there are a few clear explanations. The first is that Sons of the Forest is a sequel to the incredibly popular survival horror game The Forest. It has over 390,000 reviews on Steam, and those reviews give the game an Overwhelmingly Positive average. The Forest players are excited to revisit the experience to see what developer Endnight Games has improved.
Another reason that wishlists have jumped significantly for Sons of the Forest is that the survival horror game is launching soon. An Early Access release date for Sons of the Forest was announced at the start of February. Players will be able to try Sons of the Forest for themselves starting February 23.
Early Access for Sons of the Forest will offer both single-player and multiplayer for up to eight players. It will feature a nightmarish story, crafting, the ability to build, extensive cave systems to explore, dynamic weather, and plenty of weapons and enemies. For those looking for something to play until Starfield arrives later this year, Sons of the Forest may be a great option.
Sons of the Forest launches in Early Access on PC on February 23.
