South of Midnight’s Catfish Can Continue One of 2024’s Best…

With its Deep South setting, the action-adventure title South of Midnight is filled with characters who speak with distinctive accents - but one in particular has caught fans' attention. South of Midnight's trailers have shown a few glimpses of an enormous talking catfish who serves as a mentor and source of transportation for protagonist Hazel. The catfish, whose actor has not yet been revealed, speaks with a thick Cajun accent, which many fans have immediately connected with a similarly Cajun-accented character who became somewhat of a meme in 2024 - Deadpool and Wolverine's Gambit .

Who Is Catfish In South Of Midnight?

Catfish is one of the characters protagonist Hazel meets while journeying through a supernatural version of the Deep South in South of Midnight. Although he is a catfish, he seems to have some ability to travel on land, as Hazel first encounters him hanging from a tree. He is an apparently benevolent creature who serves as a guide and mentor to Hazel, telling her tales of some of the legendary creatures she will encounter and suggesting strategies for dealing with them. Catfish also serves as transportation for Hazel when she has to cross bodies of water.

In an Instagram post, South of Midnight developer Compulsion Games described Catfish as "an avid storyteller" who uses his "wisdom and vast knowledge of myths" to aid Hazel. He delivers this wisdom in a thick Cajun accent, which can be slightly difficult to understand at times. The accent, combined with Catfish's talkative nature and major role in South of Midnight, means that there will be plenty of quotes and lines from the character that can potentially become the source of memes among players.

Catfish Could Be The Continuation Of 2024's Gambit Memes

2024 introduced moviegoers to another Cajun-accented character, Gambit of the X-Men, portrayed by Channing Tatum in Deadpool and Wolverine. Tatum's Gambit was the second time the character appeared in film; he was previously portrayed by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Kitsch's version of the character did not have the iconic Cajun accent Gambit possesses in the comics; possibly in response to this, Tatum fully embraced the accent. Deadpool even comments on the accent in the film, asking Gambit who his "dialogue coach" was and suggesting it might have been a Minion from Despicable Me.

Deadpool and Wolverine's Gambit quickly became a meme among fans, with social media posts and TikTok videos making light of how moviegoers could not understand the character and requesting help from language scholars or people who speak with a Cajun accent in real life. Screenshots of Gambit in the film were often captioned on social media with "Unintelligible noises" or "Completely incoherent." One line in particular, "Woo, I'm about to make a name for myself, here," became particularly memetic, with fans rendering it as "Wooimbouttamakeanameformyselfere" or as a similarly bizarre collection of letters.

It would not take much for Catfish in South of Midnight to take Gambit's place as the source of "thick Cajun accent memes" in 2025. With the game now confirmed for an April release, fans will soon get a full look at just how bizarrely he speaks. It remains to be seen if any of his lines will rise to quite the same memetic level as "Woo, I'm about to make a name for myself, here," but it is certainly possible that this will happen. Alternatively, fans could make videos or altered screenshots replacing Catfish with Gambit or vice versa. 2024 was an excellent year for Cajun accent memes, but that does not mean that 2025 cannot continue the trend with Catfish carrying the torch that Gambit initially lit.
