South of Midnight has a release date: April 8, 2025. As is the case with all first-party Microsoft games, South of Midnight will be available to PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers on day one—or even sooner for those who purchase its Premium Edition.
South of Midnight was first revealed during the mid-June 2023 Xbox Games Showcase. The action adventure with a Southern Gothic setting is the third-ever title from Canadian studio Compulsion Games, which previously worked on the 2013 puzzle platformer Contrast and the 2018 immersive sim-like title We Happy Few.
Following around half a decade's worth of development, South of Midnight was treated to a release date during the 2025 iteration of the Xbox Developer Direct. The January 23 event saw Compulsion Games reveal that its upcoming title is scheduled to hit the market on April 8. The release date was shared at the end of a three-minute trailer teasing South of Midnight's story and offering another look at its Southerrn Gothic setting.
South of Midnight Pre-Orders Are Now Live, and More Affordable Than Expected
The release date announcement was accompanied by the launch of South of Midnight pre-orders, which are now available via Steam and the Xbox Store. While many contemporary games typically start at $59.99 or $69.99, South of Midnight will be more affordable than expected, with its base edition being priced at only $39.99. Coincidentally, this isn't the only title with a below-market price showcased during the Xbox Developer Direct 2025, as the January 23 event also featured the $49.99 Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
South of Midnight Premium Edition Offers 5 Days of Early Access
South of Midnight is also getting a $49.99 Premium Edition, which includes digital versions of the game's artbook and soundtrack, together with The Boo-Hag comic book by Rob Guillory. A complementary music video and documentary are also part of the package, together with five days' worth of early access. PC Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members will be able to purchase a $10 Premium Edition Upgrade in order to start playing South of Midnight as part of their subscriptions on April 3. The action adventure's below-market price is possibly related to the fact that South of Midnight will only take around 12 hours to beat, according to Compulsion Games' official estimate.
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 also featured Doom: The Dark Ages and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, both of which were treated to release dates—May 15 and April 24, respectively. Additionally, Microsoft's first showcase of the year yielded the announcements of Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, the latter of which was just shadow-dropped for PC, consoles, and Xbox Game Pass subscribers.
