South Park season 27 has been highly anticipated, but fans will be sad to learn that the new episodes aren't arriving as soon as they thought.
Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, South Park premiered on Comedy Central on August 13th, 1997 and has been a hit ever since. Every episode focuses on the main characters Kenny McCormick, Eric Cartman, Kyle Broflovski, and Stan Marsh. From the ongoing "they killed Kenny!" Joke to the characters fans know and love, South Park has become a pop culture staple, especially since every season parodies current events. The show excels at social and political commentary, although some storylines are controversial. Since season 26 ended in March 2023, fans have been waiting a while for more episodes. Unfortunately, there's an update about season 27 that fans won't be thrilled to hear about.
It's a Sad Time to Be a South Park Video Game Fan, But Hope Might Be Coming on August 1
South Park video game fans don't have much to be excited about right now, but there is hope on the horizon.
South Park Season 27's Premiere Date Has Been Delayed By Two Weeks
Deadline reported that South Park season 27 won't premiere on July 9th, 2025 as originally planned. Instead, the new season will premiere on July 23rd, 2025.
The two-week delay comes amid current negotiations and complications over South Park's streaming rights. While Max owned the streaming rights to South Park, the deal expired in late June 2025. Although viewers expected past episodes of South Park to become available on Paramount+ on July 1st, that wasn't the case. Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery have tried to purchase the rights, and at the time of this writing, it's unclear if the show will end up on Paramount+. Deadline reported that several streaming services might end up getting the non-exclusive streaming rights.
There's another part of this story, too: the merger between Skydance Media and Paramount Global, who own Comedy Central. As reported by Variety, although the announcement of the merger came last summer, the FCC hasn't approved of it yet. Since the deal is supposed to be done by July 7th, 2025, fans are curious about which streamer they'll be able to watch South Park on. For now, past seasons are still on HBO Max.
On July 2nd, 2025, the South Park X account posted a message from creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The X post reads, “In response to the press release from Comedy Central about the change in premiere date for ‘South Park’ Trey Parker and Matt Stone said – ‘This merger is a sh*t show and it’s f*cking up “South Park.” The post continued:
"We are at the studio working on new episodes and we hope the fans get to see them somehow.”‘
Fans can watch the South Park season 27 teaser now, which starts with a creepy image of a swing and a plane flying through the sky before hinting at the season's wild and chaotic moments. From plane crashes to politics, the new season looks jam-packed. While there are some sad South Park episodes, fans most associate the show with its bold storytelling and satirical storylines. Since some characters are holding a Canadian flag, it looks like season 27 could address Canada/U.S. Relations, including the tariffs. Every season features references to celebrity and pop culture news, and the season 26 premiere included Kanye West. Season 27 will also feature a plotline about Diddy, who is currently on trial.
Many episodes of South Park feel timeless, even though the show comments on current events and popular stars. The series has a high Rotten Tomatoes score of 80% and an 87% on the Popcornmeter, and fans are definitely excited to dive into the new episodes. The four main friends, characters who appear in just one episode, and the storylines always make a big impression on viewers, and the next season will likely be just as popular.
South Park season 27, episode 1 will premiere on Comedy Central on July 23rd, 2025.
