Despite the community's interest in expanding the game's multiplayer features, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 will not be increasing its co-op party size beyond three players, the developer has confirmed. The sequel to Relic's iconic Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is limited to three players in its campaign. The publisher of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, Focus Entertainment, recently announced a new co-op Siege mode for the game in an upcoming update.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is a co-op-focused third-person shooter set in Games Workshop's grimdark world, where the Imperium fights against the Tyranids of Hive Fleet Leviathan. The game follows Lieutenant Titus, a Primaris Lieutenant of the Ultramarines, as he battles the Tyranid swarm and Chaos Marines.
Space Marine 2 Leaks New Content Coming Soon
Recent Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 leaks hint at new content that Saber Interactive will roll out in the highly anticipated Patch 8.
In an interview with IGN, Saber's Chief Creative Officer, Tim Willits, has confirmed that Space Marine 2 will retain its maximum player limit of three. While expanding the limit hasn't been on the official roadmap at any point, fans had hoped that the new horde-style Siege mode in Space Marine 2 might expand that number. However, Willits stated that scaling enemy difficulty for four players was too hard to implement.
Saber Keeps Space Marine 2's Player Limit
No technical limitations were mentioned, as has seemingly been proven by modders, who've managed to come up with a workaround, thanks to Space Marine 2's modding tools. The sole reason for sticking with three players is managing the level of difficulty in the game. Willits mentioned that the challenges would simply be too easy with four members tackling the same enemies.
Official support for four or more players was shut down for the foreseeable future by Willits as he stated that there are no plans for the player cap extension. However, the modding community has been hard at work at adjusting the game's core structure. A group of modders has already released a 12-player co-op mod for Space Marine 2, breaking the game's three-player cap by a hefty margin.
Other mods have also come in to add to the experience, introducing everything from the Power Axe to Thomas the Tank Engine to Space Marine 2. With massive potential in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 for larger-scale war, among other extra features, perhaps the modding community can persuade Saber to reconsider the opportunity.
