Every weapon can be upgraded in Operations mode in Space Marine 2. As you continue to use a specific weapon, it will gain XP and can be upgraded using a special currency to progress it to the next rarity. This XP can be earned by killing enemies with that specific weapon during an Operation, rewarding players for using their favorite weapons.
Just about every upgrade will increase some stats on a weapon, while possibly decreasing others, making players pick and choose which stats are most important and how they want their weapon to perform. The most important aspect of an upgrade is the Defensive Style, which will also be determined by the upgrades on a weapon.

What Are Defensive Styles In Space Marine 2
The defensive style of a weapon determines how the player can block or parry when using that weapon. There are three defensive styles that can be used: Balanced, Fencing, and Block. Each defensive style is locked to specific upgrades, meaning the stats and defensive style are a package deal that can be mixed and matched to make your ideal weapon.
While there won't be much flexibility with early weapons, and the standard issue for all weapons is balanced, later tiers for weapons will have an upgrade for each defensive style. The effects of each defense style are:
|

|---|---|

Which Melee Defensive Style Is Best In Space Marine 2
Space Marine 2 has a heavy focus on aggressive melee combat that rewards the player with health and armor for killing enemies in melee and landing perfect parries. While blocking incoming damage can protect you, it doesn't give anything back. Overall, Fencing is the best option to get on any melee weapon, and players should prioritize it anytime they can.
Landing a perfect parry will leave an enemy open to a gun strike, which will have you pull out your sidearm pistol for a quick shot. These shots will deal much more damage than usual and can either kill or an enemy or set them up for an execution if they are weak enough. While there are some benefits to playing slow and blocking incoming damage, a wider window for perfect parries makes this play style much easier to master.
