Summary

  • Melee weapons are great for fighting swarms of small enemies.
  • Guns with high rates of fire will cut down swarms from a distance.
  • Short-range weapons are great for hip fire to take care of lots of close enemies.

There are many enemies of the Imperium players will be facing in Space Marine 2, and many of them will require players to cut through swarms of smaller enemies. These swarms consist of weak enemies that can be easily cleared with the right weapon but are also deadly if left alive for too long.

There are many weapons to use throughout each game mode, and their effectiveness against swarms varies greatly. This list will also leave out any grenades, as just about all of them are powerful options against swarms though they aren't as reliable of a choice as main weapons.

Space Marine 2: Which Melee Defensive Style Is Best

Every melee weapon in Space Marine 2 can have one of three defensive styles; here's which one is best.

6 Bolt Carbine

A Rapid Fire Sub Machine Gun

Titus Holding The Bolt Carbine
  • Firepower - 1+
  • Accuracy - 2
  • Rate Of Fire - 8+
  • Venting Speed - 5+
  • Piercing - 1
  • Range - 3
  • Magazine Capacity - 30
  • Magazine Capacity - 210

The Bolt Carbine is the closest thing to a sub-machine gun players can use in Space Marine 2. This gun has a high rate of fire but low damage for each shot, though that lower damage won't be much of an issue against weaker enemies that make up a swarm.

The main downside to this weapon is its magazine size, as the high rate of fire will eat through a whole clip in just seconds. Later upgrades can increase the magazine size, making this an overall great weapon for dealing with a charging swarm.

5 Chainsword

The Iconic Weapon Of The Space Marines

Titus Using A Chainsword In Melee
  • Strength - 5+
  • Speed - 4+
  • Cleaving Potential - 4

The Chainsword is an iconic weapon in the 40K universe for a reason, and it is excellent at cutting through swarms of gaunts. While it is not the best melee weapon to use against swarms, it is reliable and can be used by most classes.

Space Marine 2: How To Play As & Customize Chaos Space Marines

There are multiple chapters of Chaos Space Marines in Space Marine 2; here's how to play as them and customize them.

1

The Chainsword has many combos that have wide arcing swings to hit many enemies, while also being a great option for singling down the leader of a swarm to break Synapse. While this may not be the best melee weapon for a swarm, it is a good and very satisfying option.

4 Melta Rifle

Melt Anything That Gets Close

Titus Holding A Melta
  • Firepower - 8
  • Rate Of Fire - 1
  • Reloading Speed - 1
  • Piercing - 10
  • Range - 1
  • Magazine Capacity - 5
  • Ammo Reserve - 15

The Melta Rifle is one of the strongest weapons a Space Marine has access to, and can provide a heat that could melt through the armor of a tank. While this weapon has a short range, any smaller units caught in the blast will immediately be taken care of.

While the range isn't incredible, the width of each blast from this weapon is very effective at hitting many enemies charging forward at you at once. The wide range of this weapon also makes hip fire a viable option when being overwhelmed.

3 Power Sword

Choose A Stance & Cut Through Your Enemies

The Player Standing Near A Chapter Banner With A Power Sword
  • Strength - 5
  • Speed - 5
  • Cleaving Potential - 4

The Power Sword is much like the Chainsword in terms of utility, just better. While fewer classes have access to this weapon, and it does have the same strength as a Chainsword, this weapon does swing faster.

The Power Sword has two stances that can be switched between, each having benefits when dealing with swarms depending on your play style. Dealing with a swarm is all about speed, and getting more swings off in a short amount of time will offer a very noticeable difference when trying to cut through a seemingly endless horde of enemies.

2 Heavy Bolter

Plant Your Feet & Stand Your Ground Against Any Number

The Player Using A Heavy Bolter Against Gaunts
  • Firepower - 3
  • Accuracy - 1
  • Rate Of Fire - 8+
  • Venting Speed - 4
  • Piercing - 4
  • Range - 5
  • Magazine Capacity - 450

The Heavy Bolter is an even more rare weapon only being found on one class and needed to be picked up briefly during the campaign. While it takes a few shots for this weapon to get going to its full potential, you'll quickly see how many gaunts it can cut through in a short period of time.

Space Marine 2: How To Unlock Deathwatch Armor Set

The Deathwatch aren't like other chapters, and getting their armor set in Space Marine 2 is a bit different than others.

The Heavy Bolter will speed up its rate of fire until it is basically a gatling gun with the highest shooting speed in the game. Each bullet from this gun is bigger than that of a regular bolter, making it even more deadly and obliterating anything that gets hit.

1 Thunder Hammer

Large Swings With Huge Area Of Effect

The Player Landing A Massive Thunder Hammer Swing
  • Strength - 4+
  • Speed - 3+
  • Cleaving Potential - 6

The Thunder Hammer may have a slower swing speed than other melee weapons, but the explosive hit of each swing is well worth the effort. Once contact with made with a Thunder Hammer's target, the generator in the weapon will explode with a burst of electricity, obliterating anything nearby.

This weapon can also be wound up to be swung as enemies run close and bunch up more. You will take damage as you use this weapon and are between swings since the enemy attacks faster, through the number of enemies killed and health regenerated will be well worth the effort.
