Summary

  • Insomniac confirms that it won't be releasing any additional story expansions for Spider-Man 2.
  • The Insomniac data breach last year revealed three story DLCs for Spider-Man 2, but these have clearly been canceled.
  • Fans are left disappointed over Spider-Man 2's unresolved storylines, which can now be explored only in future games.

Insomniac has confirmed that it has no plans to support Marvel's Spider-Man 2 with additional story DLC. This update disheartened several fans who were patiently waiting for story expansions, and it now seems Insomniac may tie up Spider-Man 2's narrative loose ends in either a sequel or the rumored Venom spin-off.

After Spider-Man 2 launched for PS5 in October 2023, players were almost immediately inquisitive about story DLCs. Spider-Man (2018) received its The City That Never Sleeps expansion just one month after release, yet there was no word on Spider-Man 2's story DLC until the catastrophic Insomniac data breach in December 2023. The leak revealed at least three scheduled story expansions for Spider-Man 2 that would've explored some of the base game's unfinished plot threads. Unfortunately, though, Insomniac's plans say otherwise.

Why Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Leaked DLC May Happen Even if It's Not Exactly a Spider-Man 2 DLC

A leaked DLC for Spider-Man 2 is still a possibility, but it is also just as likely that the expansion could serve a greater purpose.

Alongside the recent announcement of Spider-Man 2's PC port on the PlayStation Blog, Insomniac stated that it has "no additional story content planned" for the game, dashing hopes for story DLC among fans who were waiting with bated breath for a year. Many were expectedly disappointed at the development, and some even opined that Spider-Man 2's campaign length doesn't warrant its $70 price tag without any post-launch story DLC.

Spider-Man 2 Fans are Baffled Over Insomniac's Decision to Cancel the Leaked Story DLCs

Most of all, though, fans are wondering why Insomniac decided to scrap the three Spider-Man 2 story DLCs leaked in last December's cyber-attack. Perhaps those plans were outdated, or the data breach may have compelled Insomniac to change its post-launch strategy for Spider-Man 2. The latter scenario seems unlikely, though, as Spider-Man 2 fans were very excited about the story DLCs and consistently inquired Insomniac about them right up until the studio announced that it has no plans to release them. Another hefty concern that comes with the cancelation of Spider-Man 2's story DLCs is the base game's unresolved storylines, as its bigger side quests teased the Spider-Verse and villains like Carnage and Chameleon.

With the story DLCs for Spider-Man 2 now binned, these plot threads can only be explored in Spider-Man 3 or the Venom spin-off game that's purportedly scheduled for 2025. However, 2024 is set to close out soon and Insomniac has yet to provide any details on Venom: Lethal Protector, which is a potential cause of concern for the spin-off. One could argue that this aligns with Sony's strategy of revealing games close to launch, but if the Venom game isn't announced before summer 2025 at the latest, then there may just be more bad news.
