Summary
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2's post-credits scenes seem to confirm that the next mainline game will be the last.
- Silk's introduction in one of Marvel's Spider-Man 2's post-credits scenes presents an opportunity for a Miles Morales-like spin-off game once the main story is wrapped up.
- A Silk spin-off could keep the Marvel's Spider-Man series alive beyond the third mainline installment.
With Insomniac likely shifting its focus to its X-Men series after the release of Marvel's Spider-Man 3, it seems as though the beloved series that began in 2018 will be coming to an end. This is made even more evident by Otto Octavius' "final chapter" comment in one of Marvel's Spider-Man 2's post-credits scenes, likely indicating that the next mainline installment in the series will be the last. Even so, the hope is that Insomniac would find a way to keep the series going, especially after Peter Parker's voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal, said he would be willing to play the part forever.
According to the unfortunate Insomniac leak that happened last December, Marvel's Wolverine is currently set to launch before Marvel's Spider-Man 3, but the developer is reportedly aiming to release an X-Men game shortly after that. Everything beyond that and in between is unknown, aside from the fact that there are no current plans for another Marvel's Spider-Man game apart from the third mainline entry. Assuming the Insomniac leak didn't divulge all the developer's plans, however, perhaps there is room in there somewhere for another Marvel's Spider-Man spin-off title featuring a character introduced in a post-credits scene at the end of the second game.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2's Silk Could Carry the Series Forward
A Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Post-Credits Scene Introduces Silk
If players choose to stick around through the credits at the end of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, they'll eventually be greeted by a pleasant post-credits scene featuring Miles and Hailey getting ready for a dinner party at the Morales' residence. Eventually, Miles, his mother, and Hailey are greeted by some visitors at the door — one of whom happens to be Cindy Moon, otherwise known as "Silk."
In the comics, Silk is a superhero who was bitten by the same radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker. Like Spider-Man, Silk has superhuman strength and speed, as well as a "Silk Sense," which functions similarly to Spider-Man's Spider-Sense. Whereas Peter is more of an engineering scientist, Cindy specializes in research. She is also an excellent ice skater and has a stellar photographic memory.
All things considered, it's apparent that Silk's appearance at the end of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 sets her up to be included in the next mainline installment, but there may be something even better for her beyond that.
Silk Should Get Her Own 'Miles Morales' Spin-Off Game
Just two years after the release of Marvel's Spider-Man, Miles Morales received his own spin-off game titled Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Although it was much shorter than Marvel's Spider-Man, it turned out to be, in some ways, better than the first mainline game. Those improvements are mostly realized in Miles Morales' combat, however, as its short length turned off a lot of fans. Nevertheless, its success presents a strong case for a Silk spin-off to keep the Marvel's Spider-Man series alive beyond the release of Marvel's Spider-Man 3.
Of course, this may all depend on how Silk is utilized in Marvel's Spider-Man 3, as it is currently only assumed and not confirmed that she will be joining the team as a new playable character. It could be that Silk is only introduced as a playable character near the end of Marvel's Spider-Man 3 since its story would need to spend some time developing Silk's character and her relationship with Peter and Miles. In that case, a Silk spin-off title would make even more sense, as it would provide her with the screen time she might have missed out on in the third game's story.
Even though there were no plans revealed in the Insomniac leak for a Silk spin-off title, it seems like a logical way forward. Unless Insomniac aims to make Marvel's Spider-Man 3 a much longer game than its predecessors to allow plenty of time for Silk's character arc, a spin-off game starring her would be a perfect way to keep the series alive.
