Summary

  • The huge data leak at Insomniac Games revealed a canceled Spider-Man multiplayer game.
  • The leak also included a PC build for Marvel's Wolverine.
  • Insomniac's plans may change, so leaked data may not represent their concrete plans going forward.

The huge data leak at Insomniac Games in the wake of Marvel's Spider-Man 2's release has seemingly revealed the existence of a Spider-Man multiplayer game, which has since been canceled. While Insomniac issued a statement on the data leak a few days back, it never acknowledged the existence of the multiplayer Spider-Man title.

The breach has been the talking point of the entire industry of late, with Insomniac's entire slate for the next decade seemingly leaked. It's a terrible incident which hopefully doesn't affect the studio's output too much going forward. Such was the size of the problem, that an entire PC build for Marvel's Wolverine leaked online for gamers to download, although many who grabbed it have reported receiving DMCA notices from their internet service providers since. With around 1.7 terabytes of data leaked in total, news is still emerging days later of new discoveries within the data.

As reported by Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, a multiplayer Spider-Man title was leaked to be in the works at Insomniac Games at some point over the past few years, under the title Spider-Man: The Great Web. The report claims that the game, which would have seen players fight crime across New York with fellow Spider-people, was canceled by the studio "a long time ago," indicating that many of the other claims from the leaked data may not be entirely accurate as plans change over the years. Its original intended release date wasn't clarified by the report, so it isn't clear whether Spider-Man: The Great Web was supposed to be released before or after Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

It may be that certain elements of the canceled title are still intended to be used going forward. A potential 2024 online mode for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was also leaked as part of this breach, so it seems the developer may not have dropped the concept entirely. Again, Insomniac Games has yet to comment on the leak of this online mode, so plans may change, and it may never see the light of day.

Gamers wanting news on Insomniac Games' concrete plans should take everything from the leaks with a massive pinch of salt. Although it seems like Insomniac's next five games have leaked online, long-term plans are always in motion, and they don't necessarily work out as expected, especially in an ever-changing industry often dictated by trends. The leaks are certainly an interesting look into the inner workings of one of gaming's biggest developers, but may not represent a perfect picture of Insomniac's plans going forward.
