Splatoon 3 recently held its final Splatfest, and will likely begin to slowly lose developer support over time. Although each entry has been a massive success by most metrics, there is always room for improvement. In fact, declining support for Splatoon 3 may be just the shot in the arm that the series needs.

As Splatoon 3 loses support, developers have almost certainly already set their eyes on a potential Splatoon 4. Likewise, the reveal and release of the Switch 2 seems to be more imminent than ever. If Splatoon 4 manages to follow in its predecessors' footsteps, it could become a staple of the next Nintendo console.

Splatoon 3's Final Splatfest Marks the End of an Era

Splatoon 3 recently held its last-ever Splatfest, uniquely titled the Grand Festival. Splatoon 3's Grand Festival took place between September 13 and 16 and followed suit with other Splatfests by pitting three teams against one another. The overall theme was past vs. Present vs. Future, with the three teams represented by the respective idol groups of each game in the series so far.

While each team fought valiantly to the bitter end, the Squid Sisters were crowned the winners of Splatoon 3's Grand Festival. Considering the final Splatfest was the culmination of how far Splatoon has come, it seems fitting that it was won by the duo that started it all. The winner of a game's final Splatfest has always had strong implications for the status quo of the next game, and Splatoon 3 will certainly be no different.

Splatoon 3 is Already Paving the Way for Splatoon 4

Splatfests helped Splatoon become the smash hit it is now thanks to their status as the series' main avenue for community interaction. Now that Splatoon 3 has held its final Splatfest, it's hard to imagine where else the game could go from here. Splatoon 3 has had a great run, and its lifespan coming to a close isn't necessarily bad news for Splatoon fans.

Splatoon fans are likely familiar with this song and dance by now. The series is only three games deep, but it has already become a certified household name for Nintendo. What Splatoon lacks in history, it more than makes up for with its large and loyal fanbase. With every Splatoon game being such a massive success, it seems only natural that the series will continue well into the future.

The Upcoming Release of The Switch 2

Moreover, rumors of a Nintendo Switch 2 only growing stronger in the last year at around the same time that Splatoon 3 has been winding down may turn out to be fated for both parties. In fact, recent news has led to the most credible rumors yet, with some leaks even displaying the supposed design of the console. Considering its newfound importance to Nintendo as a whole, a new Splatoon game on a new console seems like a no-brainer.

Splatoon 4 is limited to rumors for now, just as the Switch 2 has yet to be officially revealed. However, the rumors circling the latter seem to draw a lot of attention towards the former. Fans hopefully won't have to experience the same five-year gap that they endured between Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3; however, the release of Splatoon 2 makes a new game on the Switch's successor that much more likely.

Splatoon 2 was released only a few months after the debut of the Nintendo Switch. Although not technically a launch title, this makes it that much more likely that Splatoon 4 could be released alongside the Switch 2 or sometime in that vicinity.
