Split Fiction reached one million copies sold within two days of its launch, marking another successful foray into the co-op genre for Hazelight Studios. Being the spiritual successor to the highly decorated It Takes Two, Split Fiction recently rolled out amid much anticipation on March 6, 2025, across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

In a short period, Sweden-based Hazelight Studios has emerged as one of the most noteworthy developers in the industry. In particular, its 2021 co-op action-adventure game, It Takes Two, gleaned tons of praise and bagged a number of awards, including multiple Game of the Year titles. A credit to the studio's impeccable track record, the Josef Fares-led company's newest project attracted significant fanfare upon being announced at The Game Awards in December 2024. Earlier in March, Split Fiction was released to an immensely positive reception, while also managing to cross an important sales milestone in very little time.

8 Things Split Fiction Does Better Than It Takes Two

Hazelight Studios has outdone itself with its latest co-op puzzle game.

On Twitter, Hazelight Studios announced that Split Fiction quickly breached the one million mark in terms of units sold in its first 48 hours. These numbers confirmed the EA-published title's successful arrival wasn't just limited to its critical acclaim but also extended into the commercial aspect. Moreover, the sales update came right after Split Fiction was reported to have made its way onto the best-selling game charts in certain markets, including in the UK. Impressively, the game's dominant sales coincided with strong player engagement across platforms, such as Steam, where its peak concurrent player count stands at 259,003 at the time of this writing.

Split Fiction Sold One Million Copies Just Two Days After Launch

Following the latest announcement, it might be safe to say that Split Fiction has effectively met fans' expectations set after It Takes Two, if not exceeded them. When it comes to the business side of things, Hazelight's new game reached one million sales faster than its predecessor, which took nearly four weeks to achieve the feat. As far as the player count is concerned, Split Fiction crossed 197K peak concurrent players on Steam on its launch day and became the studio's best title in this regard, effectively beating It Takes Two's 71K peak count. In addition to that, sci-fi fantasy title has also become the Swedish studio's best-rated game, with a score of 90 on OpenCritic.

Although it is still very early, Split Fiction seems like a 2025 Game of the Year contender judging by its scintillating performance on multiple fronts. However, in a year that is expected to see the release of several AAA heavyweights, including GTA 6 and Assassin's Creed Shadows, whether the indie studio's co-op title overcomes the odds to win the big one is an entirely different discussion.
