Summary

  • Square Enix's new three-year plan focuses on multiplatform game releases, including Xbox Series X/S.
  • Major franchises like Final Fantasy will be part of the multiplatform approach.
  • The company aims to expand its footprint by releasing titles on Xbox and PC as well as PlayStation and Nintendo.

According to the company's latest financial report, Square Enix will continue to focus on its multiplatform game release strategy, which includes PCs and all current consoles, including Xbox Series X/S. Square Enix stated its multiplatform release strategy will be part of its "medium-term business plan" that will last until the end of March 2027 at minimum.

In 2024, Square Enix previously stated that the company would shift to releasing more major franchise games like Final Fantasy on multiple modern platforms. This shift in strategy was spurred on by news that the sales figures for both Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth failed to meet the company's expectations. In short, the sales figures were the result of Square Enix's choice to make them PS5-exclusive games. Though both aforementioned Final Fantasy titles were eventually released on PC with favorable response from fans, they arrived a year after their initial launches on the PS5.

Even though Final Fantasy 14 and Octopath Traveler 2 have seen success on Xbox consoles, Square Enix indicated the company will not stray from that trend. Square Enix's latest financial report was released as part of a three-year "reboot" that seeks to expand the company's footprint in the entertainment industry. The report reaffirmed the company's commitment to releasing more of its headline franchise titles like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts on multiple platforms like Xbox and PC, alongside its continued PlayStation and Nintendo releases.

Square Enix Remains Committed To More Xbox Game Launches

  • Square Enix released a new three-year plan in its latest financial report.
  • The plan will continue Square Enix's focus on multiplatform titles, which include Xbox ports.
  • Major franchises like Final Fantasy will still be part of Square Enix's multiplatform approach.
  • No new Xbox ports were confirmed by Square Enix.

The company's continued support of its multiplatform high definition (HD) game release strategy is part of a "medium-term business plan" that will run until at least March 31, 2027, which coincides with the end of Japan's fiscal year. Square Enix said that the ongoing multiplatform approach would naturally create an environment where more customers can enjoy its game titles. Additionally, it stated it would develop strategies for launching more standard definition (SD) titles on PC alongside mobile platforms.

While major Square Enix titles like Final Fantasy 16 and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga have not been released on Xbox Series X/S as of this writing, the company's renewed relationship with Microsoft has already borne fruit. During the 2024 Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix and Microsoft surprised Xbox fans by shadow-dropping Legend of Mana, Trials of Mana, and the six-game Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster compilation on the platform.

With Final Fantasy 7 Remake receiving a Switch 2 port, Square Enix's multiplatform release plan shows no signs of slowing down. Only time will tell when more headline franchises will reach Xbox consoles as part of this plan.
