Summary

  • Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk open to working on Squid Game season 4 if Netflix interested.
  • Hwang willing to share ideas for American spinoff, not fully hands-on.
  • Season 3 ratings lower, but potential for season 4 and spinoff.

Netflix's Squid Game has ended, but that doesn't mean saying goodbye to the concept or characters entirely. In a recent interview, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk shared what the future of the show could be, and whether he would be part of the U.S. Spinoff. He also discussed whether he would be part of a fourth season if it came to fruition.

Squid Game season 1 premiered in September 2021 and introduced viewers to the dark premise: hundreds of people enter a brutal competition that could kill them or, if they survive, change their lives forever. After a long wait, season 2 premiered on December 26th, 2024 and continued the gruesome and compelling tale. The wait was much shorter for Squid Game season 3, which arrived on Netflix on June 27th, 2025 and wrapped up the story in an unforgettable way. Now that Gi-hun's (Lee Jung-jae) journey is over, fans are eager to know what comes next.

In an interview with Variety, Hwang Dong-hyuk shared that he would be part of Squid Game season 4 if Netflix were interested in more episodes. When discussing the future of the series, he said:

"It would depend on what kind of show. If they wanted to do a following season, then I think it’s obvious I would have to participate and lead."

Hwang also mentioned that if there is an American spinoff of Squid Game, "sharing of ideas would be enough" and he wouldn't be "completely hands-on." He added:

"if Netflix asks and if I feel like my contribution is needed, then as long as it’s not something that would interfere with whatever I’m working on at that time, I would be happy to provide what they need from me."

Fans would be on board with Squid Game season 4 or an American spinoff as the premise of the series is so haunting, gripping, and memorable. After the way that the third season ended, it's easy to imagine the story continuing. After all, there are always more players willing to try their hand at these deadly games in hopes of winning money, and it feels like this cycle could go on for years or even decades. In October 2024, fans heard that David Fincher was making an American Squid Game spinoff. It sounds like, based on Hwang's comments, he would offer up some ideas and be happy to be part of creative brainstorming sessions if he were asked to. Fans have ideas for some spinoffs, whether it's a prequel or it directly follows the events of the third season finale.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang shared that he hasn't heard much about the Fincher spinoff. He said, "I've only read it in articles myself." Hwang shared that he loves Fincher's movies and called the idea "interesting."

While the previous seasons were huge hits, Squid Game season 3's premiere had lower numbers. Forbes reported that the season 2 premiere was watched by 1.9 million households in the United States, and season 3's was watched by 1.6 million, which was a 17% drop. Since season 2 had 68 million viewers over just three days, it's possible to imagine Netflix being interested in making a fourth season. However, while Hwang suggested that he would agree to work on more Squid Game, Squid Game season 4 isn't in the works right now, according to Netflix.tudum.com. But, if that changed in the future, it sounds like Hwang would be part of it. For now, fans can reflect on the memorable series finale, which is full of huge surprises and haunting, emotional moments.
