Summary

  • Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is considering multiple Squid Game spinoffs to expand the show's universe.
  • Fan theories about spinoffs include a prequel centered around the Front Man, creating excitement for new content.
  • Potential spinoffs could delve deeper into important character backstories and offer fresh perspectives on the show's events.

When a favorite TV show concludes, fans often come up with ideas for spinoffs, as long as there's a good reason to continue the richly drawn and well-crafted world the original show set up. In the case of Netflix's Squid Game, the creator and showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk has talked about a potential spinoff or even several spinoffs. When Squid Game arrived on Netflix in September 2021, fans were taken with the engaging and sad story about characters who have found themselves in terrible circumstances and who sign up for this awful competition. The complicated and tough games are just one reason why the show is so popular.

After watching the players compete with each other for a large sum of money while also hoping to survive these brutal games, there seem to be endless ideas for a new series about some or even just one of these characters. While fans have ideas about the worst Squid Game ending, they also wonder what a Squid Game spinoff could look like.

Squid Game fans have a new theory, which could be divisive but effective in ending the hit Netflix series.

Could These Squid Game Spinoffs Continue The Netflix Show's Story?

From the Squid Game characters who manipulate each other to the more kind-hearted ones, it's easy to imagine that several Players could be the focus of a new show. However, several fans agreed they would be happy to watch a Squid Game prequel about Hwang In-ho/the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and the creation of the Squid Game. Redditor @Wooden_Gas1064 wrote:

"The one I'd like to see is a backstory on the Frontman, it would be cool seeing his game and then how he rose to power."

Since the Front Man has been such a significant part of the series so far, it would make sense to focus on him in a Squid Game prequel. Fans have more than a few questions about who the Front Man was beforehand and if he was ever a good person. What makes someone want to be in control of such a terrible competition? Since a villain's origin story is just as compelling as a hero's, sometimes even more so, it would be great to see this spinoff come to life. This spinoff would feel familiar enough to fans, but would also draw them in because it would be something new and different.

Redditor @Live-Angle also mentioned a spinoff about the Front Man and the Recruiter (Gong Yoo), which Hwang Dong-hyuk has mentioned. The fan wrote:

"Front Man & Recruiter planning the next Squid Games during the downtime and how they interact. I think Front Man functions as the CEO, while Recruiter + Square Mask function as SVP of external and internal operations respectively. It would be very interesting to see how they interact with each other to prepare and plan for each Game."

Fans are curious if the Front Man will change his tune in Squid Game season 3, but no matter what happens to him, he would be the perfect choice for a spinoff. If the Front Man is the main focus of the Squid Game spinoff, viewers would get the chance to learn more about him and hopefully, their big questions would be answered. There is so much going on in Squid Game seasons 1 and 2, from the devasting deaths of several characters to the horrifying games the players are involved in. There just isn't enough time to dive deep into the Front Man's backstory, and a spinoff could help fill in the gaps.

What Did Squid Game Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk Say About Spinoffs?

David Fincher is making an American Squid Game remake, and Squid Game creator and showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk has shared his thoughts on spinoffs in a few interviews. In January 2025, he told The Hollywood Reporter:

“One of the ideas I’m tossing around is what happened between season one and two. There’s a three-year gap. So, for example, what was the Front Man doing during those three years?”

This would definitely be interesting and while it wouldn't be a Squid Game prequel, it would still answer some questions about the Front Man that viewers have. Dong-hyuk continued:

"What was the Recruiter doing? When I have some downtime, I like to just toss some ideas around and go wild with my imagination. So I guess we can be open to anything.”

Whether some fan ideas for the Squid Game season 3 ending come true, or there is a surprising cliffhanger, fans look forward to hearing more about a potential spinoff.
