Squid Game has been a steady ratings hit for Netflix since its fall 2021 premiere. The chilling games that the main characters play, along with their challenging life circumstances and past traumas, have made it must-see TV. Although there are several interesting characters to follow along with, Gi-hun, or Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae), is at the heart of the story. His dynamic with the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) is one of the best arcs on the series, and games such as Tug of War, Marbles, and Red Light, Green Light are eerie and memorable. While fans had certain ideas for the show's ending, the series finale was definitely different than they were expecting. The big twist at the end surprised many, and while some think it works, others weren't satisfied. Squid Game season 3 is coming to Netflix soon, and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk shared his spinoff idea.
Lee Jung-jae Discusses Their Take On The Squid Game Season 3 Ending
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lee Jung-jae praised the ending of Squid Game season 3. The star said that another show wouldn't have featured this type of ending, but it makes sense given the overall message. He explained:
"Squid Game is different. It’s not just spectacle — it’s about the themes of our inner humanity and societal relationships. I think director Hwang wanted a very clear and complete ending..."
The actor also shared that they had so much "trust" in Hwang Dong-hyuk that they knew this was the right direction for the story to take. They said:
"I made the choice to fully support his vision. I believed it was the best choice for the story."
Fans knew the Squid Game season 3 ending would be one to remember, and everyone is still talking about the twist. In his THR interview, Lee Jung-jae also shared his take on the ultimate theme and message of the show. He said he thinks Gi-hun represents how people can relate to each other and support each other. He said they should "try to understand each other, to keep our dignity and work towards harmony" and added, "we may see a future with less division and conflict. That's where hope lies." While there's no denying there is some evil in the Squid Game world, there are compassionate characters, too, and this contrast makes the show gripping.
While Hwang has made it clear that he chose to conclude Squid Game after three seasons, he has noted that he might be part of a spinoff or the planned American version in some way, shape, or form. Although the series premiered in 2021 and wrapped up just a few years later, he dreamed up the Squid Game premise in 2008, so he's been working on it for a long time, according to THR.
For now, Hwang is working on a new project: according to Variety, he's making a movie called Killing Old People Club which is adapted from a book written by Umberto Eco. The filmmaker and showrunner called it "more violent than Squid Game," which is notable considering the sad and horrifying deaths on the series. Previously, Hwang wrote and directed the movies The Fortress, Silenced, Desperation, and My Father.
Despite the criticism of the ending, Squid Game season 3 can still be considered a success. The six final episodes have 106.3 million total views in 10 days, and as Variety reported, Squid Game is the only Netflix show to have achieved this feat.
