Summary

  • Star Citizen is free to play until July 19 as part of the Foundation Festival 2024.
  • Players can try out ten ships and earn rewards during the event.
  • The game's long development has faced controversy, but fundraising remains strong.

Popular space MMO Star Citizen is currently free to play for a limited time only. Developer Cloud Imperium Games has made Star Citizen free-to-play as part of the ongoing Foundation Festival 2024 event.

The development of Star Citizen has been somewhat controversial. An initial early build was first released back in 2013 after a successful Kickstarter campaign, and development has continued over the last decade. Over the years, it seems as though the game has suffered from feature creep, with the planned scale of Star Citizen always increasing, leaving it still far from a 1.0 release of the full game. Even now, Star Citizen continues to break fundraising records, indicating that the game's audience isn't going anywhere despite the long development time.

Star Citizen Bans Hundreds of Accounts Following Cheating Complaints

Publisher Roberts Space Industries reveals that it has been hundreds of Star Citizens players after a recent influx of cheating.

As part of its ongoing Foundation Festival 2024, Cloud Imperium Games has made its space MMO Star Citizen free to play until July 19. This is just two months on from Star Citizen's previous free-to-play event, giving players another chance to give the game a try. Until July 19, gamers will be able to try out ten of the available Star Citizen ships, which allows them to "sample some of the unique career paths and play styles that await." This means that anyone on the fence about the game has a great opportunity to try out a variety of what Star Citizen has to offer during this period.

Star Citizen is Free to Try Until July 19

That's not all the Foundation Festival 2024 has to offer. New Star Citizen players will earn free rewards for their first three play sessions during the event, and veterans will be given three separate rewards of their own too, so no one is left out here. The Foundation Festival 2024 runs until July 31, taking it way beyond the end of the free-to-play period, and hopefully some players stick around after trying out one of the best exploration MMOs on the market.

It remains to be seen when Star Citizen will finally make it to a 1.0 release. It could still be years away, considering what the developer wants to achieve with the game. It was only a few months back that Star Citizen studio Cloud Imperium Games was hit with layoffs, despite the enormous amount of money the studio has fundraised over the years. Star Citizen is among the most expensive video games ever made at this point, and when it does eventually make it to a full release, expectations will be high for Cloud Imperium Games to deliver a title that is truly special.
