The multiplayer space trading and sci-fi combat simulation game Star Citizen has dropped a new digital ship bundle, the Legatus 2953, that costs more than a brand new car. Buyers will receive an entire fleet's worth of vessels, including some of the game's biggest ships.
First revealed back in 2012, Star Citizen has drawn in many gamers with the promise of a multiplayer experience unlike any other before it. The ambitious title, which is currently being worked on by developer Cloud Imperium Games, aims to have elements of an FPS, MMO, and space simulator. As of the game's latest 3.21 alpha build, players can enjoy some of Star Citizen's promised features, such as the ability to fly ships. While it is possible to acquire a spacefaring vessel with just in-game currency, the game also allows players to easily purchase ships with real money. The most extreme of the game’s backers can now even get nearly 200 ships in an instant via a new bundle released over the holidays.
Star Citizen's Legatus 2953 package, which includes 175 different vessels, will set buyers back an eye-watering $48,000. To put this into context, a brand new Ford F-150, one of the most popular pickup trucks in the United States, can be had for around $33,000. The online listing of the Legatus 2953 bundle on the official Star Citizen website names all of the vessels included in the pack, among them being the gargantuan Javelin-class destroyer. This mean-looking capital ship is one of the most expensive video game items ever sold, up there with absurdly expensive Counter Strike: Global Offensive AWP skins and a complete recreation of the Dutch capital of Amsterdam in Second Life.

Players who are not willing to shell out $48,000 for the Legatus 2953 pack can always buy a cheaper bundle or get individual vessels. Some of the best fighters and cargo haulers in the game are available for a more reasonable price of around $200 to $250, while the best starter ships in Star Citizen are actually below $100.
People can also just quickly farm Star Citizen's in-game aUEC currency and use that to buy ships instead of opening their wallets. Since the game is a life simulator set in space, some will definitely find excitement in the idea of starting with absolutely nothing and working toward a goal like buying a ship.
However, many players seemingly still choose to go with the easier route of just purchasing something from the in-game store. Star Citizen even raised $3.5 million within 24 hours last month, which is the title's highest fundraising record since Star Citizen was first announced more than a decade ago.
