If you consider yourself a Trekkie or a Trekker, then today is a good day for you. With the third season set to start streaming soon, Paramount+ has decided they want more of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in the future.

Although the Star Trek franchise has usually found its home on theatrical screens and traditional television networks, the past decade has signaled a significant shift for the series. After all, a Star Trek film hasn't been released in theaters since 2016's Star Trek Beyond, and a Star Trek show hasn't been seen on broadcast television since Enterprise went off the air in 2005. Beginning in 2017, all new Star Trek content has only appeared on Paramount+ (formerly CBS All Access), except for the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy, which ended up going to Netflix. Considering Paramount+ has already aired six different Star Trek shows over the past eight years and has a seventh—Starfleet Academy—on the way, it feels safe to consider the franchise a major tentpole of the streaming service's strategy. The latest news regarding the franchise's most critically acclaimed recent series, Strange New Worlds, verifies that theory quite handily.

Even though Star Trek: Strange New Worlds isn't set to return for its third season until July 17th, Paramount+ has gone ahead and renewed the show for a fifth and final season (via The Hollywood Reporter). They had already renewed the show for a fourth season back in April 2024, so finishing the show out with a fifth season this early in the game proves that the streamer is confident in Strange New Worlds' creative team to keep bringing the goods. It isn't all peaches and cream for franchise die-hards, though, as the fifth season will only house six episodes as opposed to the ten-episode count each other season of the show has had. Regardless, SNW showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers apparently had a five-season plan for the series from the very beginning, so at least that will come to fruition for the pair of creatives.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is Getting A Fifth And Final Season, Even Though Season Three Isn't Out Yet

As Strange New Worlds is technically set just before the events of the original Star Trek series and features numerous beloved characters like James T. Kirk and Spock as a result, fans have assumed that the series would end with a lead-up right into Kirk taking over the USS Enterprise. Given that Goldsman and Myers are seemingly getting their wish of five seasons, perhaps this will actually come to pass. Granted, that is years down the line, as filming on the fourth season isn't scheduled to be finished until August.

It is safe to assume much of the beloved Strange New Worlds cast will return for the final season, with Anson Mount's Christopher Pike leading the way. Both Christina Chong (Black Mirror, Doctor Who, Halo: Nightfall) and Rebecca Romijn (X-Men, The Librarians) are science fiction royalty who would be missed. Ethan Peck and Celia Rose Gooding play original Star Trek series characters (Spock and Uhura, respectively) that'll stick absoutely around. What would the show even be without Jess Bush's Christine Chapel, Babs Olusanmokun's Joseph M'Benga, and Melissa Navia's Erica Ortegas? Throw in some other legacy characters like Paul Wesley's Kirk and Martin Quinn's Montgomery Scott, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has the makings of a fan's continuing dream.
