Summary
- Star Wars Battlefront 3 is unlikely to happen as EA only plans to focus on a handful of franchises moving forward.
- An internal email states that EA is focusing on Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends.
- EA also plans to support Motive's Iron Man game and the next Star Wars: Jedi title.
Star Wars Battlefront 3 is unlikely to happen as an internal emailed leaked online reveals EA's future plans, with no mention of a new Star Wars title outside of Respawn Entertainment's third Star Wars: Jedi game. Fans of the series are currently petitioning for a third entry by giving 2017's Star Wars Battlefront 2 a massive player resurgence, but the community's efforts look like they could be in vain.
The sudden player resurgence began shortly after the finale of Andor Season 2 premiered, which received rave reviews from viewers. The finale likely had a huge impact on player's returning to Battlefront 2, alongside the much-celebrated yearly event that is May the fourth. But it hasn't just seen players return to the eight year old title, as one fan has even started a petition for EA to develop Battlefront 3. As of writing, it has almost 15,000 signatures, with the petition arguging that the Star Wars IP has contributed "signficantly" to EA's revenue stream over the past decade and that a third entry in the beloved series would "honor and celebrate the legacy of the Star Wars universe."
Star Wars: Hunters Can Still Leave Behind a Long Legacy After its Shutdown
Star Wars: Hunters may not have survived for long, but its premise and characters have the potential to live much longer in greener pastures.
Star Wars Battlefront 3 Is Not Part of EA's Plans
Yesterday, a report from IGN broke some disappointing news as it was revealed that EA had officially canceled its Black Panther game. Fans who were patiently waiting for the title were left heartbroken, as the report also revealed that the studio developing the game, Cliffhanger Games, had been closed. However, the news seems to have brought some added disappointment for Star Wars fans as an internal email reviewed by IGN revealed that EA is now focusing on a small handful of franchises, which includes Battlefield, The Sims, Skate, and Apex Legends. While it was noted that there will be continued investment in Motive's Iron Man game and Respawn's third Star Wars: Jedi entry, there was no mention of the Battlefront series.
Back in April, Respawn provided an update on the next Star Wars Jedi game, stating that it was "aiming to raise the bar again for storytelling and gameplay." A release date for the title is currently unknown, but it looks like it is now one of the few remaining Star Wars games in development under EA.
While 2015's Star Wars Battlefront received positive reviews from players, its 2017 sequel found itself in hot water due to the large number of microtransactions and loot boxes in the shooter. Thankfully, EA drastically overhauled the system before the game's launch, and it now has a "very positive" review rating on Steam with almost 60,000 player reviews.
Despite the fact that support for the title ended in 2020, a massive player resurgence has seen Star Wars Battlefront 2 break its own concurrent player count record over the weekend. The title's previous Steam record was set in 2021 with just over 10,000 concurrent players, but four years later it has set a new record with well over 18,000 concurrent players on the platform. Unfortunately, despite the community's best efforts, continued layoffs and studio closures, as well EA's plans for future titles, means a third Star Wars Battlefront game seems highly unlikely.
