Summary
- Coruscant's verticality offers unique parkour opportunities for traversal in the next Star Wars Jedi game.
- The inclusion of Coruscant as an open-world location would introduce dungeon-like exploration and hidden secrets.
- Coruscant's relevance to the narrative and timeline makes it a perfect fit for the next Star Wars Jedi game featuring Cal Kestis.
Coruscant is without a doubt one of the most iconic locations in the Star Wars universe. As the political and cultural heart of the galaxy, Coruscant has found its way into multiple Star Wars films and other media, including video games. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is one such video game to feature Coruscant in some capacity, but even though it was beautiful to look at and what it offered was a thrill to explore, it earned a mixed reception for being far too linear in light of the planet's grandeur. Now, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's sequel has a chance to feature Coruscant in a much larger light, especially after what its predecessor accomplished with the planet Koboh.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's sequel has yet to be formally announced, but plenty of reports have all but confirmed its development. With so little information about it so far, it's impossible to know where the game might take players in terms of story, but including Coruscant as a fully explorable, open-world location would be a perfect fit, considering the timeline of the story and what the series could do with the iconic planet.
Star Wars Jedi Threequel’s World Needs to Strike a Balance Between Large and Laborious
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor might have made leaps by making its world much larger, but the next game needs to strike a balance between size and design.
Star Wars Jedi 3 Could Make Coruscant the Ultimate Jedi Playground
Coruscant's Verticality and Density Would Allow for Unique Platforming and Parkour Opportunities
Coruscant is a planet-wide city with massive skyscrapers and sprawling skylines, which means traversal and parkour in the next Star Wars Jedi game wouldn't just be about moving forward, but also about moving up and down if the planet were featured in an open-world capacity. Both Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor introduced a touch of verticality in their world design, but what the series could accomplish with an open-world Coruscant in the next entry would be unprecedented.
The Star Wars Jedi series may not be all about parkour and platforming, but it does play a significant role in the game's exploration, and Coruscant could only make it more engaging if it was done right.
Unlike past locations in the Star Wars Jedi series, Coruscant also has entire underworld levels, which would be perfect for dungeon-like exploration. This would be a great way for the third Star Wars Jedi game to introduce some extra hidden secrets in Coruscant, and potentially rare equipment and collectibles. Additionally, given Coruscant's endless traffic lanes, hijacking or riding speeders could add a whole new layer to traversal.
Coruscant as a Key Location Would Fit Star Wars Jedi's Timeline Well
Of course, in order for a fully explorable Coruscant to be included in the next Star Wars Jedi game, it would need to be relevant to both the narrative and the timeline. Ultimately, that depends on where the next entry takes Cal Kestis and how Coruscant fits into the wider Imperial era. During Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which takes place around 9 BBY, Coruscant is under complete Imperial control, serving as the Empire's capital. The Jedi Temple has been converted into the Imperial Palace, and security is tighter than ever, meaning it would be very dangerous and risky territory for Cal to venture into.
Coruscant is a planet-wide city with massive skyscrapers and sprawling skylines, which means traversal and parkour in the next Star Wars Jedi game wouldn't just be about moving forward, but also about moving up and down if the planet were featured in an open-world capacity.
That being said, should the next Star Wars Jedi feature a time jump of around 5 years, like the time jump between Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor, the rebellion would be really starting to take off during that time, with Coruscant's underground serving as a base of operations for it. As such, its inclusion as a primary location in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's sequel would be perfect, as Cal works alongside the rebellion to push back the Empire. Since the first game in the series saw Cal on the run, and the second game began seeing him move more in opposition to the Empire, the third game could have him fully devoted to moving against the Empire, regardless of the risk involved.
Coruscant's potential as a fully explorable location in the next Star Wars Jedi game is undeniable. From its skylines to its hidden underworld, the planet presents an opportunity to offer a degree of traversal, exploration, and even narrative that past installments have been unable to achieve. If the next entry embraces the city's verticality and integrates it meaningfully into Cal's ongoing battle against the Empire, it could deliver a setting that not only surpasses the scope of Koboh but also cements Coruscant as one of the most immersive locations in Star Wars gaming. Whether through high-speed speeder chases, rooftop parkour, or tense infiltration deep within the heart of the Empire, Coruscant has everything necessary to push the Star Wars Jedi series into exciting new territory.
