Summary

  • Stig Asmussen, director of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Fallen Order, is leaving Respawn Entertainment and EA to pursue other adventures.
  • The Star Wars Jedi: Survivor series might continue with future iterations, but it will be without Asmussen as one of the key players.
  • Despite Asmussen's departure, Respawn Entertainment is still working on exciting unannounced projects, and there may be a potential third game in the franchise.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor director Stig Asmussen is leaving both Respawn Entertainment and EA in order to "pursue other adventures." Asmussen, an industry veteran of nearly 25 years, also helmed the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor predecessor, Fallen Order.

The recent sequel was both a critical and commercial success for Respawn and EA. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor reviews were almost universally positive across the board. The game built on the success of Fallen Order and continued to expand and improve upon much of what the original had to offer. If the series is moving forward with future iterations, however, it will be doing so without one of the team's key players.

Bloomberg's Jason Schreier broke the news that director Stig Asmussen is leaving Respawn Entertainment and EA after directing two major successes in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Fallen Order. EA confirmed this report and stated, "Asmussen has decided to leave Respawn to pursue other adventures."

EA claims "veteran Respawn leaders" will be stepping up in the absence of Asmussen. While a new entry in the series has yet to be confirmed, a third Star Wars Jedi game would not be a surprise as both titles before it were extremely successful. Things are looking good for fans hoping to see more in the series as Respawn Entertainment has posted job listings for a Principal Game Writer. Asmussen has expressed the desire to do a trilogy of games, but if and when that does happen, he will no longer be with this franchise.

Asmussen isn't just a veteran at EA, as the director has been in the industry for decades and even worked on the original God of War trilogy. Still, the absence of Asmussen will allow for others to step up if a new Star Wars Jedi title is indeed happening. EA CEO claims Respawn is working on some exciting unannounced projects, but it is unclear if this is referring to another entry in the Star Wars Jedi franchise.

Last-generation console owners still haven't gotten the opportunity to play the game yet, but Star Wars Jedi: Survivor PS4 and Xbox One versions are currently in development. Gamers are still unsure when to expect those as EA has still not provided a release date or window. Either way, the porting of previous-generation console versions might not hinder the development of a potential third game in the franchise. That said, the team seemingly continues to be hard at work optimizing the current version of the game as a new update was released in early September.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is currently available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
