According to a new report from Game File's Stephen Totilo, a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 remake could be in development. This report comes four years and two months after Aspyr's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake was first announced, a project that fans haven't seen since that initial reveal.
The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake has had quite the turbulent development journey. In July 2022, just 10 months after its reveal at the September 2021 PlayStation Showcase, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported that the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake had been delayed indefinitely and that the game's design director and art director had been fired following an internal showing of a vertical slice demo to Lucasfilm and Sony. Another Bloomberg report in August 2022 claimed that Aspyr had been removed from the project altogether, and that Saber Interactive is now leading development on the KOTOR remake, which was confirmed in March of this year by Saber CEO Matthew Karch.
A Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 Remake Could Be On The Way
While the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is reportedly still in development at Saber Interactive, there's been no official trailer or re-reveal since the studio took over from Aspyr in 2022. Despite that, a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 could be on the cards already, according to court documents revealed by Game File's Stephen Totilo.
Published on December 8, Game File's "Who killed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II’s 'Restored Content DLC' for Switch? Disney lawyers" report begins by discussing Aspyr's Nintendo Switch port of KOTOR 2 that released in June 2022, and its failed plans to bring the game's infamous cut content mod to the official port. According to the report, while Aspyr tried its best to bring the "Sith Lords Restored Content Modification" to its KOTOR 2 Nintendo Switch port, Disney's legal team ended up blocking the mod's release on Switch due to a lack of clearances surrounding those who originally made the mod for PC.
This alleged block from Disney forced Aspyr to publicly cancel KOTOR 2's cut content mod, which itself resulted in two separate lawsuits filed by two individuals who accused Aspyr of false advertising. While the lawsuits were settled outside of court, a wealth of legal documentation surrounding them has now become available, including one document that lists a project "Juliet," which is described as a full remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 that was in development alongside the remake of the first game.
Given that Aspyr is no longer working on the Star Wars: KOTOR remake, it would seem likely that this KOTOR 2 remake is no longer in production. However, according to these legal documents, the KOTOR 2 remake was reportedly still planned as of March 2025. Of course, even if this Star Wars: KOTOR 2 remake is still on the cards at Saber Interactive, there's no guarantee it will see the light of day. It's very likely that Saber will want to see how the first KOTOR remake performs critically and commercially before it greenlights a sequel for full production, and that first remake could still be a ways off.
