Like any good RPG, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has a plethora of engaging side quests. These Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic side quests range from simple fetch quests, to more challenging bounty hunts, to lengthy dueling tournaments, to even a planet-hopping scavenger hunt or two, all of which provide the player with much-needed XP and loot.

While Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic's main quest is often heralded as the game's greatest strength, these side quests are instrumental in giving KOTOR its epic scale, and they provide consistent opportunities for the player to cement the type of character that they want to become. The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is still shrouded in mystery, but it'd be smart for it to keep most of the original game's side missions intact. And there's one Manaan quest in particular that deserves the full works.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Shouldn't Shy Away From Sunry's Murder Trial

A Brief Overview of KOTOR's Sunry Murder Trial Quest

After recruiting the self-exiled Jedi Jolee Bindo and landing on the planet of Manaan, players will be approached by a woman named Elora. Elora pleads with the player-character to help her husband, Sunry, who is currently awaiting trial for the murder of a Sith woman named Elassa. If players accept the optional quest, they become the Arbiter of Sunry's trial, and it's up to them to determine the truth behind the accusation.

After interrogating witnesses, investigating the crime scene, and hearing some rumors at a local cantina, players will be able to question Sunry about his involvement with Elassa. Sunry reveals that he was having an affair with Elassa and didn't know that she was a Sith spy. Upon finding out about this betrayal, the long-time Republic soldier killed Elassa in her sleep.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic's Sunry Murder Trial quest can end in one of three different ways. If the player chooses to withhold evidence from the Manaan civil court, then Sunry will be found guilty and convicted to serve a life sentence. If the player shows the court the Republic records of Sunry killing Elassa, he's given the death penalty. If players manage to smooth-talk the Selkath judges, Sunry can walk free, and his wife expresses her gratitude.

Sunry's Murder Trial Poses Some Important Moral Dilemmas

Some of the best story content in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic are quests that present the player with a moral dilemma, and ask them to make the final decision regarding the subject's future. The Sunry Murder Trial is arguably the best instance of that.

Sunry is objectively guilty, confessing quite quickly to the player-character that they killed Elassa. But Sunry refuses to admit any personal wrongdoing, claiming that he was working in the Republic's best interest, killing a Sith spy who was furthering Darth Malak's goals. Sunry even defends his actions by asking the player-character how many Sith they've killed during the ongoing war, stating that it's no different.

Throughout KOTOR, players are shown repeatedly that not all Sith are inherently evil, some have just made mistakes and fallen in with the wrong crowd. Sunry's belief is that all Sith deserve death, and it's up to the player to decide whether they agree with him and whether that makes him innocent or guilty in their eyes. These tough moral dilemmas give Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic some real narrative and thematic depth, and the upcoming remake needs to make sure it keeps the quest intact.
