Summary

  • Star Wars Outlaws is highly anticipated for its unique gameplay experience.
  • The cities in the game will likely act as hubs where players can interact with new characters, complete missions, and acquire gear.
  • The space environment in Star Wars Outlaws will be more than just a loading screen, as players will be able to explore and engage in various activities, including space dogfights.

Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment's upcoming Star Wars adventure, Star Wars Outlaws, is one of the most anticipated titles of 2024 as it claims to be the first true open-world Star Wars game to date. Star Wars Outlaws' story follows Kay Vess as she travels the galaxy in an attempt to pull off the biggest heist the Outer Rim has ever seen.

In a recent interview with Kotaku, Narrative Director Navid Khavari disclosed information regarding three key environments in Star Wars Outlaws — bustling cities, open environments, and space — each of which will provide players with a unique experience. While Khavari was fairly cryptic in his descriptions of these environments, several assumptions can still be made about what they will bring to the game.

Star Wars Outlaws' Three Key Environments Each Provide Unique Experiences

The Cities of Star Wars Outlaws Will Likely Act as Hubs

Almost every Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment open-world title in the past has been known to include a wide variety of cities and towns to visit, and Star Wars Outlaws will be no different. The developer has yet to provide any thoroughly specific details about Outlaws' cities, but it's possible to speculate on their role based on what information has been given and Ubisoft and Massive's history with similar locations.

Khavari describes the cities of Star Wars Outlaws as "bustling with activity," which is to be expected from Ubisoft. When considering the urban locales of Ubisoft and Massive's past games, the cities in Star Wars Outlaws are likely going to act as a hub of sorts where players can pick up new missions, meet new characters, form new alliances, and barter with vendors for gear and other useful items.

Outlaws' Open Environments May Follow Ubisoft's Traditional Model

As it is being developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, Star Wars Outlaws' open-world environments are bound to follow the developers' traditional model for open worlds. This means players are likely to find the game's map chock-full of icons, each of which denotes a specific activity to complete or a collectible to find. However, if the developers have learned anything from the reception of their past open worlds, perhaps they have considered going a different direction in Outlaws.

It would be a nice surprise if Star Wars Outlaws' open environments drifted from what has become typical for Ubisoft and Massive. After all, Massive attempted an evolved version of Ubisoft's open-world model in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, but it still wound up falling back into the same repetitive and empty nature the developers' open worlds are often known for.

Space in Outlaws Will Likely Be More Than a Glorified Loading Screen

Star Wars Outlaws' most notable environment is already proving to be space, primarily due to Khavari's comments on it. In his interview with Kotaku, Khavari stated that players will be able to "explore" space aboard their ship, the Trailblazer. The implications of this comment are enormously positive, to say the least, as it shows the developer's commitment to ensuring Star Wars Outlaws' space will be more than just a glorified loading screen for its players.

Unlike Starfield's space, for instance, which largely serves as a point of transition for players to get from one point to the next, the prospect of exploring space implies it will likely be home to a variety of activities, just as the game's open environments are. While it has already been confirmed that there will be space dogfights in Outlaws, that didn't imply exploration of any kind.

There are plenty of features to anticipate in Star Wars Outlaws' three key environments, simply based on what information has been divulged thus far. However, only time will tell if Massive's ambitious design choices paid off as the upcoming Star Wars heist adventure continues to soar toward its 2024 release.
