Star Wars Outlaws creative director Julian Gerighty recently shared some insight into how large the game’s planets will be and how long it could take players to navigate through them. Announced way back in 2021, Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment’s Star Wars Outlaws is the first open-world game set in the Star Wars universe, with players taking the role of an aspiring scoundrel named Kay Vess as she tries to pull off the biggest heist in the history of the Outer Rim.
To do so, Kay will need to travel across several classic Star Wars planets and make some shaky alliances with various criminal organizations. Star Wars Outlaws has already promised a variety of different activities for players to partake in while navigating the Outer Rim, such as smuggling missions, spaceship battles, and even the famous card game Sabacc. There will even be a Grand Theft Auto-style wanted system, with Kay having to evade escalating Imperial forces should she run afoul of the Galactic Empire.
Why Star Wars Outlaws Getting Compared To Uncharted Is Great
When Star Wars Outlaws was revealed, gamers expected a typical Ubisoft game, but now it is being compared to Naughty Dog's excellent Uncharted series.
In a recent interview with IGN, Star Wars Outlaws creative director Julian Gerighty revealed that the game’s planets, consisting of Tatooine, a Toshara moon, Akiva, Kijimi, and Cantonica, will be roughly the size of two or three zones in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. According to him, the Toshara moon is close in size to Akiva and Tatooine, though he believes that Tatooine is slightly bigger. Gerighty remained tight-lipped on whether Kijimi and Cantonica are the same size but did state that it could take Kay about four to five minutes to travel all the way around Toshara (and possibly Akiva and Tatooine) on her speeder bike.
Star Wars Outlaws’ Planets Might Be Smaller Than Expected
Gerighty noted that this travel time would only apply to players going directly from one end of Tosharra to the other nonstop without being distracted by any Star Wars Outlaws missions or side activities they might encounter on the way. Ubisoft has previously confirmed that Star Wars Outlaws will take most gamers approximately 25 to 30 hours to complete if they simply stick with the main storyline, making it more compact than other Ubisoft-published open-world titles. Gerighty says that his team is taking a “quality over quantity” approach with Star Wars Outlaws and that they don’t want it to be “big for big sake.”
Instead, Gerighty and Massive Entertainment felt that Star Wars Outlaws should be “contained, always fun, and always proposing different activities,” and that the team thought about Star Wars Outlaws’ planets in terms of how long it would take to travel across them rather than how big they are. In that sense, Star Wars Outlaws will offer up explorable worlds that might not seem that vast on paper, but are teaming with things to do and characters to meet on Kay’s mission to become the most famous criminal in the galaxy.
