Summary

  • Star Wars Outlaws will offer an open-world experience featuring multiple planets.
  • Cantonica has the potential to provide a heist mission similar to one from Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • The planet's reputation and depiction would be a good fit for such a mission in Star Wars Outlaws.

Star Wars Outlaws' release is almost around the corner, set for the end of this month on August 30. Marketed as the "first truly open-world Star Wars experience," the possibilities that this design and vision will bring to the IP are exciting indeed. Developed by Massive Entertainment in partnership with Ubisoft, Star Wars Outlaws promises to provide fans with an immersive playground as they take on the role of small-time criminal Kay Vess and follow her attempts to scrape by in the seedy underworld of the galaxy during the Imperial Era.

The collection of planets in Star Wars Outlaws that players will be able to visit includes a range of both familiar and lesser-known ones. One in particular, though, has all the trappings to emulate a setpiece mission featured in Red Dead Redemption 2. The planet of Cantonica and its luxury casino hold the potential to set up a similar version of the heist pulled by the Van der Linde gang in RDR2's "A Fine Night of Debauchery."

Star Wars Outlaws Planet Cantonica Explained

Star Wars Outlaws may not have a concrete release date just yet, but Ubisoft has already confirmed a few planets, including the familiar Cantonica.

Star Wars Outlaws' Cantonica Could Mirror a Major Red Dead Redemption 2 Moment

Red Dead Redemption 2's 'A Fine Night of Debauchery' Mission

During the course of the Van der Linde gang's endeavors in Red Dead Redemption 2, protagonist Arthur Morgan is introduced to the mayor of the city of Saint Denis. While scouting out and gathering information at a party hosted by the mayor, Arthur and friends get wind of a high-stakes gambling tournament taking place aboard a local riverboat, The Grand Korrigan. Arthur and the other gang members quickly form a plan to enact a brazen theft of the Korrigan's clientele and vault, plotting an elaborate grift on one of the rich patrons who will be participating.

Once it's underway, "A Fine Night of Debauchery" is a truly memorable Red Dead Redemption 2 mission. Starting out with some tense rounds of poker, Arthur coordinates with his fellows to win before the target becomes too suspicious. The crew then have to raid the safe without raising alarms, with Javier Escuella disguised as a guard to complete the subterfuge. Of course, they are discovered at the last minute, and the quest culminates in a wild shootout and escape from the boat. Most notably, the scheme is largely successful, with the gang managing to get away with the valuable loot and dividing the spoils with the rest.

How Cantonica Could Set the Stage for Star Wars Outlaws' Own RDR2-Style Casino Heist

Making an appearance in 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Cantonica is most recognized for the glamor and glitz of its central casino city, Canto Bight. With Star Wars Outlaws' focus on the criminal side of things and all the double dealings involved, Cantonica could be a perfect match for Kay to get into and out of trouble via an intricate mission while showing fans more of the workings of the planet during her adventures. Resembling some other elements of RDR2's version, Outlaws could have Kay pose as a wealthy tourist as well as allying with specialists who provide support for what is likely too big of a job for one person.

Star Wars Outlaws' reputation system will be a core mechanic that shapes both narrative and playstyle. In this vein, perhaps fans will need to acquire the right contacts or uncover key bits of information leading up to a major mission, or before they are able to access certain parts of Cantonica's casino, like a high-roller's section or private tournaments. Many of the aspects surrounding Cantonica as well as Star Wars Outlaws' themes naturally lend themselves to it having a standout mission like Red Dead Redemption 2's "Fine Night," and it would be an excellent inclusion if this is the case.

Star Wars Outlaws will feature a variety of mini-games, any of which would also be primed to be featured in an RDR2-like heist set on Cantonica.
