As a game about the rogues and scoundrels inhabiting a galaxy far, far away, it's not surprising that hacking is heavily featured in Star Wars Outlaws, which fans will know is called Slicing. And though the mechanics will not be entirely unfamiliar to fans of the sci-fi action-adventure and action-RPG genres, it can still be tricky for veterans and newcomers alike. This guide will explain Star Wars Outlaws Slicing mechanics, and provide strategies for increasing Kay Vess' chances of success.

Slicing in Star Wars Outlaws, Explained
Hacking in Star Wars Outlaws, or Slicing, is a hugely important mechanic. Like a lot of Outlaws, the difficulty level may be surprising to players. There are not many quest chains that do not feature Slicing in some capacity, so it is important that players at least grasp the basics.
Slicing Basics:
Generally speaking, the goal with the Slicing mini-game is to find the correct sequence of symbols in a straight line from left to right. There are multiple difficulty tiers, with each tier increasing the sequence length by one. The first tier features a three-symbol sequence.
Discovering the correct sequence follows these steps:
- Selecting three guesses (for the lowest difficulty level) from a large pool of possible symbols, found on the left side of the screen.
- The guesses will be placed in the sequence you chose, in three boxes on the right side of the screen.
- Like a popular word puzzle game, you will then receive important information about each of your guesses. If the guess is crossed out with a red X, that means that it is not in the sequence at all. If it turns yellow, that means the symbol is in sequence, but it is in the wrong slot. Finally, if it turns blue, you know that the symbol is correctly placed in the sequence.
- Based on the results you receive, you will move any yellow choices to a different point in the sequence, and replace any incorrect symbols with new guesses.
- The ultimate goal is to figure out the sequence before you run out of attempts. If you guess incorrectly on your final attempt, any enemies in the area will be alerted to your presence. You will be able to keep trying to find the solution. In some situations, rewards will be slashed if you go over your allotted attempts.

Advanced Slicing in Star Wars Outlaws
After completing the first few missions for Danka, the player will be given intel on two new Experts. One of these Experts relates directly to Slicing, and will affect how you deal with hacking throughout the rest of the game. This character is The Slicer, and should be unlocked quickly if you are interested in getting the most out of this particular mechanic.
Advanced Slicing Explained:
Unlocking The Slicer will automatically unlock her first ability, the Slicing Kit. This new ability allows Kay to Slice a much wider range of items, such as certain electronic barriers, and advanced terminals. Kay will likely encounter the more advanced version of the Slicing minigame before acquiring the Slicing Kit, and it is possible to successfully hack them without the kit. However, once the Slicing Kit is acquired, advanced slicing will be far easier. You will also encounter it far more frequently, as the kit allows Kay to slice far more.
Put simply, advanced slicing is more difficult because the codes become longer. Instead of the three symbol codes you first encounter, advanced slicing will require four, and even five-symbol codes. The Slicing Kit, and the Slice Kit Upgrade ability, offer Kay some helpful tools to conquer this task.
- Slicing Kit Tool 1: Blue Lines – Once you have the Slicing Kit unlocked, you will notice a series of blue lines connecting some of the white symbols in the symbol pool to other symbols. When you hover over a symbol, look for flashing blue lines connecting it to other symbols. The connected symbols form a group, and in that group, there is at least one correct symbol. If you pick one symbol from a group of four connected symbols, and it is wrong, you know at least one of the other three will be correct.
- Slicing Kit Tool 2: Jokers – The Slicing Kit has three 'Jokers' built into it, which are helpful tools that can be used once per slicing session. Each Joker requires a certain amount of power, which is represented by a small battery symbol within the device. The Slice Kit Upgrade ability from The Sliver increases the amount of battery power that is available for Joker use.
Make sure to save after completing a difficult Slice.
