The Star Wars universe is chock-full of deep lore and history that each new form of Star Wars media pulls from, and Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment's Star Wars Outlaws will be no different. Set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Star Wars Outlaws sees outlaw and scoundrel Kay Vess and her alien companion Nix setting out on an adventure to pull off the biggest heist the Outer Rim has ever seen. Star Wars Outlaws is an expansive Star Wars adventure and the first of its kind, giving Kay and her companions a ship called the Trailblazer to take them seamlessly from planet to planet with no loading screens.
Star Wars Outlaws is far from the first Star Wars game to allow travel by ship, but it is the first game to feature the Trailblazer. The Trailblazer is unique to Star Wars Outlaws, but it still has a lot of history — as is expected of almost anything in the Star Wars universe. In fact, Kay's Trailblazer dates back to the Clone Wars and happens to share similarities with another famous Star Wars ship that has become a household name since its 1977 introduction.
The History and Lore of Star Wars Outlaws' Trailblazer
The Trailblazer Is a Light Freighter From the Clone Wars
While Star Wars Outlaws' Trailblazer is an original creation for the game, it still classifies as a light freighter in the Star Wars universe. Light freighters have been around since before the Clone Wars — at least 56 BBY ("Before the Battle of Yavin", when Luke Skywalker destroyed the Death Star). It's possible light freighters were in production much earlier than 56 BBY, but the earliest known light freighter was manufactured in 56 BBY by the Corellian Engineering Corporation. Today, that light freighter is known as the Millennium Falcon. Other notable light freighters are the Hound's Tooth, which belonged to the bounty hunter Bossk, and the Ghost, which was operated by the Spectres during the Imperial Era.
Light freighters serve one primary purpose in the Star Wars universe: transporting various goods, both legal and illegal, from one location to another. This is why the Millennium Falcon is commonly referred to as a smuggling ship. Light freighters are generally outfitted with enough weaponry and armory to allow for safe travel between planets, which is precisely why Han Solo was able to use the Millennium Falcon to help Luke when he needed it most during the attack on the Death Star. Star Wars Outlaws' Trailblazer is similarly outfitted and also fits the bill for Kay Vess, the outlaw that she is.
The Trailblazer Is the Last of Its Kind Due to Budget Constraints
Despite being a type of ship canonical to the Star Wars universe, the Trailblazer is an EML 850 light freighter from the Clone Wars created specifically for Star Wars Outlaws. The game explains the Trailblazer's originality in it being the last of its kind due to budget constraints. The Trailblazer's materials simply cost too much to reproduce, so it was never mass-produced during the Republic Era. This means players will be unable to find any ship like the Trailblazer in Star Wars Outlaws, making for a unique experience for them and the game's characters.
Players will likely be spending plenty of time aboard the Trailblazer in Star Wars Outlaws, which makes its history and lore all the more worth knowing. As players take Kay and her team to the stars to travel to distant planets and fend off enemies in Star Wars Outlaws, they can be sure that the ship they are piloting stays true to Star Wars canon while also being an original design for the first open-world Star Wars game ever made.
