A surprising leak came through Wednesday morning about an unannounced Star Wars game. A PlayStation Network scraper bot that automatically posts new games added made a surprising reveal. "The game Maverick has been added to the european PSN!" Read the message it posted, along with a single image. The image featured a logo for Star Wars: Project Maverick, with a Star Destroyer and several X-Wing spaceships in the background. As for what Project Maverick might be, it's still a mystery.
Despite apparently being added to the European PlayStation Network database, Star Wars: Project Maverick's profile is either still private or was pulled quickly. There's simply no other official information about the game.
Since the reveal of Star Wars: Project Maverick, however, some leaked information has been reported. Kotaku's Jason Schreier confirmed that Star Wars: Project Maverick is the same game as he'd recently reported on a retrospective on canceled Star Wars games. In the report, Schreier says that EA has a new Star Wars game in development at its young EA Motive studio in Montreal, Canada. Star Wars: Project Maverick is that game.
The only other information about EA Motive's Star Wars project that Kotaku reported was that it is a "smaller, more unusual project." While it's not much to go on, it does at least provide a good baseline for expectations. This isn't a Star Wars: Battlefront or a Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. This is a smaller project. It may even be a digital-only project.
A "smaller project" doesn't help clarify the matter in the slightest, of course. Smaller projects are incredibly diverse, after all. Coming from EA, however, it would be surprising if the new game didn't have some kind of online or "Games as a Service" component to it. At the very least, it's confirmed for consoles, which implies a certain expectation of quality.
Kotaku's report, put out in late February, confirmed that EA currently has two different Star Wars games in development. Star Wars: Project Maverick from EA Motive is one of these two games. The other one is said to be a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at Respawn Entertainment. Given the lofty aspirations that EA had for the Star Wars franchise some years ago, it's a surprisingly limited array of titles. If both games are great, however, then Star Wars fans can hardly ask for more.
Star Wars: Project Maverick is unofficially confirmed for PS4 and has no current release date.
