Atomic Mass Games just announced Star Wars: Shatterpoint, a new miniatures skirmish game set in a galaxy far, far away. The new Clone Wars-themed Star Wars miniatures game is set to release in June 2023.
Star Wars: Shatterpoint is being developed by Atomic Mass Games. As the miniatures game developer for tabletop giant Asmodee Games, Atomic Mass directs many Star Wars tabletop games like X-Wing, Armada, and Legion, as well as Marvel Crisis Protocol.
The game itself promises strategic, objective-based combat between two squads of iconic Star Wars characters. Players can make thematic squads, like General Grievous and his bodyguard droids, or mix and match their favorite characters from across the franchise. Each character has special abilities and combat skills to influence the battlefield and accomplish objectives. Though Star Wars: Shatterpoint will most likely branch beyond it, the Starter Set seems to be full of characters featured heavily in the Clone Wars animated series, including Ahsoka Tano, Asajj Ventress, and Captain Rex, plus Star Wars legends like Count Dooku, Maul, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker.
From its description, Star Wars: Shatterpoint sounds like it will be a cross between Star Wars: Legion–a large-scale battle game–and Marvel Crisis Protocol, Atomic Mass Games’ superhero squad battle game. Though Star Wars: Shatterpoint will undoubtedly have its own spin on the formula, interested players should view the rules of these other battle games to get a feel for what to expect. Players should also brush up on their handicraft skills, as the miniatures for Star Wars: Shatterpoint will need to be assembled and painted.
The trailer for Star Wars: Shatterpoint did a great job at getting players hyped for Atomic Mass Games’ new strategic installment. The Clone Wars is a vastly popular piece of Star Wars media, with many popular and iconic characters to choose from. Most fans agree it is the perfect place to start for a character-centric squad-based battle game, especially with Star Wars shows like The Mandalorian and the upcoming Ahsoka tapping into the lore and characters from the animated series.
However, some players are annoyed that Star Wars: Shatterpoint seems incompatible with Star Wars: Legion. The new game’s figures are slightly larger, are approximately 40mm scale, compared to the 47mm scale used by its mass battle predecessor, meaning Legion players won't be able to use their existing miniatures in Shatterpoint. These players will have to see how Star Wars: Shatterpoint plays before deciding if it is worth investing in a whole new collection of miniatures, especially if they end up needing to buy the same characters for two different games.
