Star Wars games have had a rough few years, with both Battlefront games being marred by controversy and multiple Star Wars game cancellations. However, Star Wars: Squadrons, revealed today by EA, looks promising, judging by its initial trailer. However, those waiting for gameplay before passing judgment are in luck, as Star Wars: Squadrons gameplay will debut during EA Play.
The annual event, which EA has traditionally used as its own sort of E3 press conference, typically provides a slate of new details for EA's upcoming games, and this year should be no different. There are only a few games confirmed to make an appearance at the show, which takes place on June 18 at 4 PM PST, but Star Wars: Squadrons gameplay will certainly be one of the more exciting items on the list — it is a new Star Wars game, after all.
EA didn't dive into the specifics of what will be shown, but fans will likely see quite a bit of flashy sequences when the gameplay releases. The initial trailer showed pilots from both the Rebel Alliance and the Empire being featured in the campaign, and there's a strong likelihood fans will get an idea of what it's like to fly a TIE Fighter and an X-Wing when the gameplay does launch.
Other than that, details are pretty sparse. Squadrons takes place after the events of Return of the Jedi, so fans should see largely battered and broken Empire out for revenge, but the gameplay is something of a mystery. There have been pilot-focused Star Wars games and in the past, but it's been decades since a major one was released, though Star Wars: Squadrons will be budget-priced.
Of course, Battlefront 2 does have space battles, and fans of the franchise tend to have a soft spot in their hearts for that kind of imagery, with Imperial Star Destroyers being one of the most immediately recognizable sci-fi ships out there. That does put Star Wars: Squadrons at an advantage as far as fan-interest is concerned.
No to mention, Star Wars: Squadrons supports VR, which will be yet another cool addition to the game's space combat. Fans will have to wait and see if Squadrons is worthy of the Star Wars title, but it's looking promising.
