The immersion level of the newly announced Star Wars: Squadrons just received a massive boost. The first-person space dogfighting game will launch on October 2, for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. When it comes to the PS4 and PC versions, Star Wars: Squadrons will also support virtual reality (VR).

Star Wars: Squadrons will launch with both multiplayer and single-player. The official site for the game explains that the intense 5v5 dogfights, the teaming up with friends, and the thrilling single-player campaign will be able to be played in their entirety in VR.

Squadrons takes place after the events of Return of the Jedi, the final film in the original beloved trilogy. So many children, and children at heart, have imagined taking up an X-Wing and blasting away TIE Fighters in space, and now the opportunity has presented itself in perhaps a more immersive way than ever.

2019 may not have been a banner year for VR, but solid experiences were still put forth by developers. Games like Resident Evil 7, Beat Saber, Super Hot, and Tetris Effect are all insanely fun in virtual reality. 2020 may end up being one of the best years for VR to date, as Half-Life Alyx is a game of the year contender and now Sqaurdons looks to be impressive.

Many fans will be interested to know that Star Wars: Squadrons is being priced as a budget title, as it will go for $39.99. No information has yet been given as to why the game will not sell for the full standard $59.99, as it seems like an expansive and fleshed out game thus far. Obviously those who want to play in VR will still pay the $39.99 price, but will have had to fork out a pretty penny for the VR device itself.

Previously, the only way to get an immersive experience of Star Wars in gaming was through the extremely expensive Star Wars arcade machines. But even that doesn't give the full 3D "in the moment" feeling of VR. Placing a VR headset could feel like putting on a pilot's helmet, and Squadrons could then take players to a galaxy far far away.
