With Stardew Valley’s 1.6 Update, you are allowed to adopt more than one pet. To do so, you must first satisfy your original companion - gifted to you by Marnie - and prove that you are a trustworthy pet parent. But that’s just the beginning, so, in this guide, we walk you through the essential steps of getting multiple pets in Stardew Valley’s latest version and explain what has changed about companion animals in general.
Stardew Valley: How To Get Married
As players get closer to the townsfolk in Stardew Valley, they can choose to get married. Here's how to do it.
How to Get More Than One Pet in Stardew Valley
To adopt multiple pets, you must earn 1,000 friendship points with your first pet. After that, you must purchase a Pet Bowl from
Robin. When this pre-fabricated building is on the farm, you can talk to Marnie about getting new companion animals.
Here are the essential steps:
- Adopt the first free pet that Marnie brings to your farm. (The event is triggered on the 20th of Spring in the first year.)
- Max out your friendship level with your original pet. (Earn 1,000 points with them.)
- Purchase a new Pet Bowl from Robin’s Shop. (Each Bowl costs 5,000g and 25 Hardwood.)
- Wait for Marnie’s letter that will introduce Pet Licenses.
- Visit Marnie’s ranch to buy additional pets from her. (Bring at least 40,000g.)
If you don’t like the style of your new pet, change it in the Wizard’s basement using the Shrine of Illusion. By gifting 5,000g to this tomb, you will be able to alternate between different variants of your pets. (You cannot change their species, though.)
How to Max Out Your Pet’s Friendship Level
You earn twelve friendship points each time you pet your animal companion. Additionally, you get six extra points for refilling their Water Bowl.
With quick math, if you manage to pet your animal every day, you will max out their friendship level in about 83 in-game days. However, bowl refills also grant additional friendship points, which can accelerate the process.
You can’t lose friendship levels with pets, regardless of your actions.
Where to Buy New Pets in Stardew Valley
After the 1.6 Update, Marnie's Shop includes a new service called “Pet License.” Purchasing these items allows you to add more companion animals to your farm. Marnie’s Ranch is located to the south of your farm, and she’s the go-to seller of livestock and animal products.
Pet Licenses are expensive, with their base price starting at 40,000g for regular Cat and Dog variants and going as high as 500,000g for the rare Purple (Iridium) Turtle.

The New Pet Options in the Stardew Valley 1.6 Update
The March 2024 Update (V1.6) added two new pets to Stardew Valley: Regular Turtle and Iridium Turtle. In addition to these new animals, the game introduced never-before-seen variants of Dogs and Cats. Marnie now sells two Doghouses and Cat Trees, along with a Birdhouse that can attract wild birds.
You can now skip the pet adaptation scene when Marnie visits your farm. (Doing so will automatically adopt the first pet.)
How to Remove Newly Adopted Pets
If you want to get rid of an adopted pet, use the Butterfly Powder. This new item removes a pet permanently, creating more room for other animals. To purchase the powder, visit Krobus’s shop in the Sewers - they will sell it to you for 20,000g.
