The Earth Crystal is a mineral usually found by mining in Stardew Valley, but it can be also be found in some other places. Earth Crystals are needed to create some machines and buildings, as well as to fill the requirements of the Boiler Room bundles.
How to Catch All Legendary Fish in Stardew Valley
This guide breaks down the locations and tips for catching all Legendary Fish in Stardew Valley.
Updated April 25, 2025 by Mina Smith: Since a pile of new updates have hit Stardew Valley since the original posting of this article, it is time again to update everything inside of it. The newest update as of rewriting is the 1.6 update, and it has added another enemy that will drop this much-needed material. While the best place to farm these rocks is in the Mines, additional ways to get materials in a life simulation game are always welcome news.
What Earth Crystals are Used For in Stardew Valley
Mainly, Earth Crystals are used to make Earth Obelisks and Mayo Machines. An Earth Crystal can also be used in the sewing machine to make shirts, in dyeing to make orange dye, and as a requirement for several quests.
Note: As of Version 1.6, Earth Crystals are no longer a possible Midnight Carp Fish Pond request, and they are no longer used to make Sturdy Rings.
To make a Mayonnaise Machine that turns eggs into mayo, players will need to reach Farming Level 2. This will unlock the recipe for this machine; after that, collect 1x wood, 15 x stone, 1x copper bar, and 1x Earth Crystal. Then, once the machine is made, you can pop in an egg to get some delicious, fresh mayonnaise for all your cooking and gifting needs.
These rocks are also needed to make an Earth Obelisk. This useful building can transport the main character from their farm to the mountains in an instant. It takes 500,000g, 10x Iridium Bars, and 10x Earth Crystals. Players will need to have completed the Goblin Problem quest to unlock the teleportation buildings in the Wizard's Tower.
Players will also need Earth Crystals for a few other things:
- One Earth Crystal can be used to make an orange-brown shirt in Stardew Valley's Sewing Machine, or as an item for orange dye.
- Random quests on the Wanted Board may request an Earth Crystal. Each quest grants 150g and 150 friendship points.
- Stonefish in a Fish Pond will need five of these Crystals to upgrade the pond from 3 to 5 fish.
- There's a chance that one or two Earth Crystals may be requested by Catfish, Largemouth Bass, or Bullheads to grow their Fish Ponds from 5 to 7 fish.
- The Geologist's Bundle in the Community Centre Boiler Room requires an Earth Crystal.
- Almost everyone likes receiving an Earth Crystal as a gift. The exceptions are Linus and Pierre, who both dislike them.
Best Places to Find Earth Crystals
The best place to find Earth Crystals is on levels 1-39 of the mines, where they can be foraged directly off the ground without any tools. Players can also get them from killing Duggies, which spawn on levels 1-29, as they have a 10% chance to drop them when defeated.
Other places to find Earth Crystals are:
- Inside Geodes and Omni Geodes
-
Killing Haunted Skulls (1.3% chance)
- Haunted Skulls spawn only on dungeon floors of the regular mines and in the Quarry mine
- In Fishing Treasure Chests
- In the water while panning in Stardew Valley
- Inside of trash cans
- Killing Iridium Golems and Wilderness Golems (which only spawn on the Wilderness Farm)
- Crystalariums: this machine can infinitely duplicate any gem places inside it, including Earth Crystals, which duplicate in about 13 in-game hours
The most reliable way to get these rocks and many others is to spend some time delving through the mines. This will help players get the Earth Crystals they need and the other gems and rocks to help them craft other recipes or make some money for themselves.
