A Stardew Valley player has shared a brief video that gives the player's farm a hyper-realistic overhaul in Unreal Engine 5. The video is a glimpse into what it could look like if Stardew Valley were made with modern bleeding edge graphics rather than the pixel art style it uses.
Stardew Valley is loved in large part due to its art style, which immediately conveys a charming and homey feel. Even in the creepier moments of Stardew Valley, the art style remains consistent, and many fans love the fact that the title resembles an old-school game. Even so, there are undoubtedly some who have wondered what it would be like if Stardew Valley were closer to real life in appearance.
Stardew Valley fan and artist stopfootage shared their idea of what that could be like with fellow fans. The brief video is shot to look like cellphone footage, looking at the farmer's house and then panning away to look at a small crop of plants growing on the farm. The area is surrounded with towering trees, and Unreal Engine 5's excellent lighting is on full display here, with shadows and water reflections looking particularly impressive.
Fellow fans looking at the video have been extremely impressed, with several wanting to see more of the game's iconic locations reproduced this way. The artist said that they would consider rendering some more shots from the area, though they also wanted to focus on additional locales in Stardew Valley, like the beach, complete with Willy's fishing shop. Another said that the look of the farm reminded them of The Forest, which the artist said that they were definitely inspired by for the style they went with. Fans also seem very hopeful to get their hands on this as a demo, even if they can only look around and enjoy the environment.
Seeing Stardew Valley Through a Different Lens
While it's extremely unlikely that the game will ever shift away from its pixel art style, that doesn't stop fans from imagining what the world would look like with a little more realism. Many fans have previously made 3D models, both digital and physical, recreating things like the farmer's house or the Wizard's Tower. Others have brought the villagers of Pelican Town to life in The Sims, giving them a 3D overhaul in the process. It's always fascinating seeing how other artists imagine the world of Stardew Valley, and fans are eager to see more of how stopfootage imagines it.
