Transforming your shed into a personal aquarium in Stardew Valley is an attainable dream: All you need is a Fish Tank. Surprisingly, many players are unaware that this decorative furniture can be obtained quite early in the game, allowing you to add a cozy touch to your shed without investing in extensive home upgrades. With that being said, here’s everything you need to know about unlocking, using, and maintaining Fish Tanks.
Stardew Valley: How to Grow Garlic
Garlic is a cheap and useful crop in Stardew Valley, but you won't get easy access to it at first.
How to Get a Fish Tank
To buy a Fish Tank, consult Willy at the Fish Shop. His store is located on the Beach, where you learn how to fish for the first time. He sells the two base models—Small and Large Fish Tanks—for 500g and 2,000g. For the other three versions, you must unlock the Furniture Catalogue, complete a Special Order, and farm Qi Gems.
Here’s a guide to getting all five Fish Tank variants:
-
Small Fish Tank: Purchase it from Willy for 500g.
-
Large Fish Tank: Purchase it from Willy for 2,000g.
-
Modern Fish Tank: Get the Furniture Catalogue for 200,000g.
-
Deluxe Fish Tank: Complete the Tropical Fish Special Order.
-
Aquatic Sanctuary: Purchase it from the Walnut Room for 20 Qi Gems.
How to Use a Fish Tank
Place a sea creature in the Fish Tank by pressing the interact button while it’s equipped. Removing it from the tank is just as simple—perform the same action while empty-handed. If you wish to view a list of items inside the tank, right-click on the tank without any equipment in hand.
The fish in the tank don’t need to be fed and will live on their own.
You can put the following creatures in a Fish Tank:
- All regular fish types
- All Legendary Fish types

How to Decorate a Fish Tank
You can decorate any Fish Tank by adding Stone, Seaweed, and Coral. Equip one of these ornaments and interact with the tank to place it at the bottom in a random position. If the placement doesn’t suit your preference, pick up and replace the Fish Tank to re-roll the position.
You can make a Sea Urchin wear a hat before putting it in the Fish Tank.
