With there being many different craftable items in Stardew Valley, there are also many different materials that can go into these items. While some of these are easy to find and obtain like fibers, wood, and stone, others like Refined Quartz require a few more steps to get.

Normal pieces of quartz can be found in Stardew Valley rather easily with it being a foraged item in both the mines and Skull Cavern. This cannot be used as a replacement for refined quartz, but it can be made into it.

Updated May 2025 by Renri Seong: Refined Quartz is a type of resource that's used in a variety of crafting recipes in Stardew Valley. Refined Quartz can be difficult for new players to farm in the first month and a half of their playthrough. Despite this, it'll be easier to collect them after you've explored the lower levels of the mines and have more than one Furnaceon your farm. You'll need Refined Quartz to craft a new item that was added to the 1.6 update. The following guide has been updated and revamped to include recent information on the Refined Quartz item in Stardew Valley.

How To Get Refined Quartz In Stardew Valley

Refined Quartz Crafting Time

SV Smelting
Stardew Valley Smelting Quartz

There are several ways to get Refined Quartz in Stardew Valley. The most common way, and the method you're likely to use the most, is smelting. To smelt ore and quartz, you'll need a Furnace.

Smelting

To get x1 Refined Quartz, you'll need to smelt x1 Quartz. Alternatively, when you start exploring the deeper levels of the mines, you'll find Fire Quartz. Smelting x1 Fire Quartz will make x3 Refined Quartz. This is useful if you need more than one Refined Quartz. Both Quartz and Fire Quartz take 1h 30min in-game to become Refined Quartz.

Furnaces require Coal to be used. Make sure you have x1 Coal as well as the x1 Quartz or Fire Quartz.

Recycling

Another way to get Refined Quartz is to place Broken CDs or Broken Glasses into a Recycling Machine. It takes 1h in-game to turn Broken CDs and Broken Glasses into Refined Quartz. You'll get the crafting recipe for the Recycling Machine at Fishing Level 4.

Searching Trash Cans

You also have a chance of getting Refined Quartz and other Bars from the trash cans in Pelican Town. However, these won't appear until after you've received the Furnace crafting recipe from Clint.

Defeating Ghosts in the Mines

Refined Quartz are a rare drop from the Ghosts in the Mines on floors 51-79. Once you unlock Skull Cavern, you'll find Carbon Ghost enemies on the Mummy Floors. These also have a rare chance of dropping Refined Quartz.

Fish Ponds

The final way of obtaining refined quartz is through owning a Ghostfish pond. Fish Ponds can be placed on your farm by speaking to Robin at the Carpenter's Shop. To get a Fish Pond, you'll need the following:

  • 5000g
  • x200 Stone
  • x5 Green Algae
  • x5 Seaweed

Once the Ghostfish pond reaches maximum population (9), they'll occasionally leave you a Refined Quartz every two days. To raise the fish pond population, you may be asked for any of the following:

  • x5 Quartz (population: 1)
  • x5 Cave Carrot (population: 3)
  • x5 White Algae (population: 5)
  • x1 Dwarf Scroll I, x1 Dwarf Scroll II, or x2 Refined Quartz (population: 7)
