Six years on from its original release, Stardew Valley remains one of the most popular titles in its genre. The farming sim RPG has grown massively since 2016, with many updates adding swathes of new content, items, and locations. The Stardew Valley 1.5 update was one of the biggest ever and extended the game's story to incorporate the mysterious Ginger Island.

One of the most important currencies on Stardew Valley's Ginger Island is Golden Walnuts, which players can offer to the island's many Parrots for a variety of services. Parrots are the gatekeepers of Ginger Island, and players will need to find them all and spend 116 Golden Walnuts in order to unlock the complete island.

Ginger Island Parrots that Unlock New Areas

Leo's Hut - 1 Golden Walnut

The first parrot that players will need to feed on Ginger Island is the one in Leo's house. For a single Golden Walnut, which can be easily obtained along the path from the beach, it will unlock the north side of the island. Additionally, the parrot in Leo's house will also offer the player hints on how many Golden Walnuts they still have to find on various parts of the island.

Moving the Turtle & Bridge Repair - 10 Golden Walnuts each

To unlock the rest of Ginger Island, players will need to collect 20 Golden Walnuts in total. Half of these can be fed to the Parrot on the beach near the sleeping turtle, west of the Docks. This will unlock the west side of the island, and allow players to access the Island Farm. The other 10 Golden Walnuts can be fed to the Parrot to the west of the Island Field Office. This will repair the bridge leading to the Dig Site, which serves a similar purpose as Pelican Town's Mines and Quarry.

Island Buildings - 75 Golden Walnuts total

As well as unlocking all of Ginger Island, feeding the Parrots in Stardew Valley is also essential to building it up.

  • Ginger Island Farmhouse - Unlocked by feeding 20 Golden Walnuts to the Parrot next to the derelict shack.
  • Farmhouse Mailbox - Unlocked by feeding 5 Golden Walnuts to the Parrot at the farm once the Farmhouse is complete.
  • Island Trader - Unlocked by feeding 10 Golden Walnuts to the Parrot at the farm once the Farmhouse is complete.
  • Ginger Island Resort - Unlocked by feeding 20 Golden Walnuts to a Parrot by the Docks. This will also unlock the south-east of the island and the Pirate Cove.

Island Shortcuts

The final 4 Parrots on Ginger Island are all about creating shortcuts, allowing Stardew Valley players to bypass some of the island's more annoying or difficult areas:

  • Farm Obelisk (Warp Totem) - Unlocked by feeding 20 Golden Walnuts to the Parrot at the farm once the Farmhouse is complete.
  • Volcano Bridge - Unlocked by feeding 5 Golden Walnuts to the Parrot by the Volcano Dungeon entrance after players have completed the dungeon.
  • Volcano Exit Shortcut - Unlocked by feeding 5 Golden Walnuts to the Parrot on level 5 of the Dungeons, creating an exit to the east side of the Volcano.
  • Parrot Express - Unlocked by paying 10 Golden Walnuts to the Parrot north of the farm, which will allow players to quickly fly all over Ginger Island.
