Many fans of Stardew Valley enjoy the game for its simple yet enjoyable farming, fishing, and more. This means collecting all the different types of crops and fish is a priority for many players who are looking to complete their whole collection in the game.

Most Stardew Valley fish cannot be found in just any spot or at any time during the year. Each fish has different requirements that need to be met in order to find them, and some can take a lot of time and effort before you reel them in. Chubs are one of the more common fish in the game, but you'll still need to follow a few guidelines to be able to catch one.

Where to Find Chubs in Stardew Valley

Chub are not a particularly uncommon fish, nor are they that difficult to catch. However, you cannot find one just by going to any river or beach. Instead, you will need to visit one of these two locations:

  • Mountain Lake
  • Cindersap Forest River

The Mountain Lake is in the northeast region of Pelican Town, directly to the right of the Carpenter's Shop. It's a large, diamond-shaped lake that has small bridges crossing through it. If you fish here during any season, at any time of the day, you're bound to pick up a Chub at some point. You won't need to use bait, but you can if you prefer. Standard Bait decreases the time needed to wait for a bite.

As for the Cindersap Forest River, you can find it in the southwest portion of Pelican Town, just south of the player's farm. There will be a river running through the forest, which you can fish in to get a Chub. You can use the above images as a reference to its location.

While Chub are river fish, they won't spawn in the town's portion of the river. They only spawn in the river in the forest.

Other Sources of Chubs

There are two non-fishing ways to obtain a Chub in Stardew Valley:

  • Cats with max friendship may gift one to the player
  • Krobus might sell five of them on Wednesdays for 200g each
  • The Traveling Cart may have one in the random rotating stock, priced anywhere between 150g and 1,000g

How to Use Chubs in Stardew Valley

Image of a Chub being sold to Willy in Stardew Valley

Like most fish in Stardew Valley, Chubs are predominantly used for selling. This variety sells for a base price of 50 g, all the way up to 100 g, depending on quality and player Fishing Skill Professions. If you have the Angler Level 10 for Fishing, an iridium-quality Chub can sell for 150 g. As for what else you can use it for, here's a list:

  • One Chub is required for the Field Research Bundle in the Community Center
  • Making Maki Rolls or Sashimi requires almost any fish
  • Crafting Quality Fertilizer requires any fish and some Sap
  • As a neutral gift for a handful of villagers, in a pinch
    • They're a neutral gift option for Demetrius, Sebastian, Willy, Pam, Linus, Leo, or Elliott; they're disliked or hated by everyone else
  • In a sewing machine to make a Fishing Vest
  • Willy may ask to see some Chubs on the Help Wanted board (you can keep the fish)
  • In a Fish Pond
  • They may be requested by a Dorado, Lingcod, or Pike Fish Pond

Since Chubs are pretty common, it's a good option to use them in some of your recipes that ask for any type of fish, as they're much more common and less profitable than other species. Be sure to save one for the Field Research Bundle to get a Recycling Machine in return. If you need to make a bit of cash, though, it's also a good idea to sell it.

When placed in a Fish Pond, Chubs can produce Chub Roe. They won't produce any other items.
