The popular country life simulation game, Stardew Valley, isn’t just limited to farming and raising crops. Players have the freedom to engage in several other activities, such as fishing and mining. These skills can level up over time as players learn to catch more fish and mine more resources in Stardew Valley.
The Mines in Stardew Valley are filled with rugged rock and dirt patches. Rocks can be mined with a Pickaxe to yield different kinds of ores, Stone, and Geodes. Geodes are essentially hollow rocks that contain various artifacts and basic resources. They add an element of mystery to the game – as players never know exactly what they’ll find inside one.
Stardew Valley: Every Buff and How to Get Them
Between food, drinks, and enemies, Stardew Valley has plenty of ways to make farm work and combat easier or harder.
Updated May 4, 2025, by Usama Ali: While Stardew Valley's 1.6 update brought a ton of new content and features, the core mechanics of the four geode types – Common, Frozen, Omni, and Magma Geodes – largely remain the same. As of the new update, there are more opportunities to get each of these geode types. We’ve updated this guide to add all the ways to get Common, Frozen, Omni, and Magma Geodes introduced in the 1.6 update.
How to Get Geodes in Stardew Valley
The first time a player will find a
Geode is probably when they’re breaking stones on their farm. An egg-shaped item will drop with a pop-up text informing players that the local blacksmith can break open the geode for them.
Common geodes are usually obtained by breaking rocks in the Mines or are dropped by Duggies. A Duggy is an enemy found in the Mines and has a 25% chance of dropping a Geode. Besides this, Geodes are also found as loot in Fishing Treasure Chests and can be received as a gift at the Feast of the Winter Star.
In Stardew Valley, Fishing is another way to acquire Geodes. When a Stonefish Fish Pond’s population reaches 9, it may produce 1 or 5 Common Geodes. For players who have not upgraded the Farmhouse, Geodes can be found in the Supply Crates on the Beach Farm.
All Types of Geodes and Where to Find Them
There are four types of Geodes:
Common Geode,
Frozen Geode,
Omni Geode, and
Magma Geode. They are all found deep within the Mines, on different levels.
Common Geodes
These egg-shaped geodes are frequently found on Levels 1-39 in the Mines. Players will need to break any rocks they find using a Pickaxe or a bomb. Common Geodes contain artifacts, minerals, and basic resources such as Stone, Clay, and Coal.
Iron Ore can be obtained from a Geode after players reach Level 26 of the Mines.
Omni Geodes
Omni Geodes are a cluster of stones with colorful flecks. These are usually located in the Mines on floors 21 and above. They can also be found in the Skull Cavern (on all floors). If a player knocks out a Carbon Ghost, there’s a 99% chance for it to drop Omni Geodes. Players can purchase Three Omni Geodes from the Oasis on Wednesdays for 1000 g each. One can be purchased from Krobus’s Shop on Tuesdays for 300 g.
In addition, when the population in an Octopus Fish Pond reaches 9, it can produce 1, 3, or 10 Omni Geodes. Omni Geodes may contain a very rare gem, namely “Prismatic Shard” but it’s impossible for players to receive a Prismatic Shard before cracking at least 15 of these geodes.
Stardew Valley: How to Catch Every Fish
With a good lure and a few crab pots, anyone can fill in the fish list of Stardew Valley.
Frozen Geodes
Frozen Geodes are more triangular and can be found on Levels 41 to 79 of the Mines. The theme for these levels revolves around the concept of the “Frozen Earth”. These geodes can also be found on the Farm in Winter, inside Fishing Treasure Chests, or received as gifts at the Feast of the Winter Star.
- When the population of an Ice Pip Fish Pond reaches 9, it may produce 1 or 5 Frozen Geodes.
- A Frozen Geode may contain a rare foraged mineral, namely the “Frozen Tear”, although the chances for that are slim.
Gold Ore can be obtained from a Frozen Geode only after the players reach Level 76 of the Mines.
Common Geodes
Apart from being found in the early Mines, Common Geodes can also be dropped by Duggies and even Fishing Treasure Chests. A few of these Geodes can also be found in Supply Crates on the Beach Farm, as long as the farmer has not upgraded their Farmhouse.
Omni Geodes
The 1.6 update expands the ways players can obtain Omni Geodes, making them more accessible. Here are all the new ways to get these geodes:
- Trout Derby Reward: During the new Trout Derby festival in the summer, one of the possible prizes is 3 Omni Geodes.
-
Prize Machine Reward: The new Prize Machine, located in
Lewis
' house and fueled by tickets earned from completing quests and special orders, offers 8 Omni Geodes as the 18th prize.
- Meteorite Drops: Breaking a meteorite that lands on the farm now has a chance to drop Omni Geodes.
- Iridium Golem Drops: After reaching Combat Level 5, Iridium Golems in the Skull Cavern now have a chance to drop Omni Geodes.
Frozen Geodes
While Frozen Geodes are typically found in the mid-levels of the Mines, they can also be purchased from
Sebastian during the Desert Festival in Stardew Valley. One Frozen Geode costs 10 Calico Eggs.
Magma Geodes
Fiery red Magma Geodes can be found on levels 81 to 119 of The Mines. They can additionally be found by breaking boxes and barrels in the Skull Cavern.
- Magma Geodes can also be received as gifts at the Feast of the Winter Star and are found in Fishing Treasure Chests too.
- A Fish Pond containing at least 9 Lava Eels can produce 5 Magma Geodes, while 10 can be obtained from a pond containing 10 fish.
- Magma Geodes may contain Fire Quartz, a rare crystal found near hot lava. Although the odds of players obtaining this are quite low.
When players reach Level Six in Mining, they unlock Bombs. Bombs can help speed up breaking rocks in the Mines.
What to Do with Geodes in Stardew Valley
All kinds of Geodes need to be cracked open to reveal what they contain inside. To open a Geode, players need to carry it to the local Blacksmith’s shop. Clint will break open any geode for 25 g. Alternatively, players can build their own Geode Crusher using 2 Gold Bars, 50 Stones, and 1 Diamond. Players can receive this crafting recipe after completing Clint’s special order “Cave Patrol”.
Most Geode types, namely Common, Frozen, and Magma Geodes, can be requested by the Raccoon in Stardew Valley. These requests are part of a new questline focused on helping Raccoon and his family settle in the Valley.
Common geodes can be sold for 50 g, Frozen Geodes for 100 g, and Magma Geodes for 150 g. Omni Geodes have a selling price of 0 g.
