Being the magical farming sim that it is, Stardew Valley lets players use interesting consumables that offer more than just a quick fix for hunger or fatigue. There are a bunch of Warp Totems that instantly transport you to a specific location, and even a Rain Totem that can make it rain on a dry, summer day. Rain Totems are a great way to have some control over the weather in Stardew Valley, which can influence a lot of things in the game.

Stardew Valley: The Best Fish For Fish Ponds

With the help of this guide, Stardew Valley players can uncover which fish are the most profitable and efficient to raise in Fish Ponds.

How To Unlock The Rain Totem in Stardew Valley

Before you can craft Rain Totems, you need to unlock the crafting recipe for it. The recipe for the Rain Totem unlocks when you reach Foraging Level 9.

The best way to gain Foraging experience is by chopping down trees. You can get 25 XP for chopping down Large Stumps and Large Logs, and up to 14 XP for fully chopping down a regular tree (Maple, Oak, Pine, Mahogany). As you gain Foraging experience in Stardew Valley, you'll eventually reach the required level, and the recipe will automatically be added to your crafting menu.

How To Craft The Rain Totem in Stardew Valley

Once you have unlocked the recipe, you will need the following ingredients to craft the Rain Totem:

  • 1 Hardwood: You can get Hardwood by chopping down large logs and stumps. The Secret Woods is a reliable source of large stumps.
  • 1 Truffle Oil: You can make Truffle Oil by putting a Truffle (found by pigs in a Deluxe Barn) into an Oil Maker (unlocked at Farming Level 8).
  • 5 Pine Tar: You can collect Pine Tar by placing a Tapper on a Pine Tree and waiting several days.

Simply combine all of these to craft the Rain Totem. Alternatively, you can occasionally find one to three Rain Totems in treasure rooms within the Skull Cavern.

When To Use The Rain Totem in Stardew Valley

When To Use The Rain Totem in Stardew Valley

Rain Totems are useful for watering crops, fishing for specific rainy-day fish, and activating certain events that require rain. However, keep in mind that these totems only guarantee rain for the next day and are consumed upon use.

When you use a Rain Totem, its effect is localized to the specific region where you activate it. Pelican Town and Ginger Island each have their own weather system that operates separately. If you use a Rain Totem in Pelican Town, it only influences the weather in Pelican Town for the next day. Ginger Island's weather will remain whatever it was naturally going to be.

Additionally, Festival days in Stardew Valley have pre-determined weather. If you use a Rain Totem the day before a festival, the weather on the festival day will be what the game has set it to be. Your Rain Totem will still be consumed, but it won't result in rain on the festival day. This also applies to the very first day of each new season. Using a Rain Totem on the last day of the previous season will not change the weather for the first day of the new season.
