RNG has been a fundamental aspect of Stardew Valley since its inception. However, over the years, players have managed to decipher how ConcernedApe's random number generator code operates. This has resulted in numerous profitable — and occasionally dubious — exploits that enable speedrunners (and opportunistic players) to complete the game much more rapidly than intended. However, with the 1.6 Update, the developer has tackled this issue by eliminating access to all RNG exploits — provided you keep the Legacy Randomization setting turned off. Legacy Randomization Explained
In the pre-1.6 versions of Stardew Valley, the game’s RNG follows a predictable pattern, now referred to as the Legacy Randomization system. However, in the latest edition of the game, the default RNG has been altered to eliminate any exploitable patterns. Nonetheless, players who prefer to maintain the original number generator can choose to retain the Legacy Randomization in the settings.
With Legacy Randomization enabled, players could exploit mining, foraging, and crafting, utilizing methods such as clay farming, predicting mushroom levels, and employing the crop pot fish offset technique. However, the 1.6 patch eliminates access to these methods by introducing a more intricate random number generator.
How to Turn Legacy Randomization On or Off
Before building a new world, toggle Legacy Randomization from the Character Customization menu. Do so by clicking the wrench icon in the corner and scrolling down until you see the titular item. You can also change this setting from the Advanced Save Options in the game.
Should You Turn Legacy Randomization On or Off?
As indicated in the settings’ description, it’s generally recommended for most players to keep Legacy Randomization turned off. This option is primarily intended to assist speedrunners in completing the game as swiftly as possible. Regular players who wish to immerse themselves in the story and crafting elements of Stardew Valley can safely disregard this option altogether.
To experience V1.6 as intended, turn Legacy Randomization off. ConcernedApe, the developer of Stardew Valley, desires casual players to encounter all the challenges of grinding in a fair environment, which is why predictable RNGs have been removed from the default game.
However, if you’re a speedrunner or a veteran player interested in exploits, you’re welcome to turn on Legacy Randomization. Enabling this setting won’t impact achievements, and you'll still be able to strive for Perfection.
