Summary
- Fans wanting to befriend more characters like Morris and Gunther
- Stardew Valley designed for player to build friendships with majority of villagers
- Despite many updates, players can't make friends with characters like Marlon and Gil
Stardew Valley players are lamenting the inability to make friends with some of the characters in the game. While most of Stardew Valley's town villagers can be befriended through gifts and conversations, some are noticeably absent from the list.
Stardew Valley's relationship system is designed in such a way that most of the villagers in the town can build a friendship, or more, with the player. Players can befriend over 30 characters, but there are a few outliers that fans feel should have made the cut.
Stardew Valley Fan Shows Off Adorable Tattoo
One Stardew Valley player takes to social media to show off their adorable tattoo while sharing a personal story about their connection to the game.
Reddit user LawsonLevi took to the Stardew Valley community to lament the lack of ability to make friends with people like Gunther and Morris. LawsonLevi points out that non-human characters like the
Dwarf or
Krobus are villagers that can make friends with the player, and in Krobus' case, even more with the Stardew Valley farmer. However, several humans are absent from the list. In addition to the two aforementioned, Marlon, Gil, and Ginger Island residents Birdie and Professor Snail aren't included on the friendships list and can't be gifted anything.
Stardew Valley Players Want More Friends
Numerous fans have come out of the woodwork to share their feelings on the matter, with the vast majority agreeing, at least regarding some of the NPCs. A number of fans were quick to voice that they aren't interested in befriending Morris, given his association with Joja Corp. Him aside, fans have also pointed out that it's particularly odd that players can't make friends with some of the more social folks on the list, like Marlon, who attends Stardew Valley's seasonal festivals. Some have gone so far as to lament that some of these characters also aren't romanceable, either, while others have pointed out that Gunther never even seems to leave the Stardew Valley museum, leading some to joke that he's actually a ghost.
This isn't the first time that players have been disappointed at the inability to befriend or romance certain characters. Previously, fans have pointed to the nameless cashier who works at the Joja store, and later on in the town's movie theater. The game is designed so that the player can become best friends with nearly everyone in town, so those outside the list stand out. Given how many years that Stardew Valley has been receiving updates, it seems unlikely for a change this big to be made anytime soon. It's possible that the developer doesn't see any potential friendship storylines for these characters, or he might think that the list is already big enough. While players may not have their wish granted by an official source, mods are a potential option for those who feel disappointed.
