One clever Stardew Valley player has stumbled upon an unconventional way to use torches to light up their farm, placing them atop fence posts. Lighting options in Stardew Valley are limited, especially outdoors, but this way of using torches presents them in a much more aesthetically pleasing way.

There are a couple of different ways to get torches in the game. One of the simplest is to find them in Stardew Valley's mines or other dungeons and use a pickaxe to add them to the bag. They can also be crafted with a beginner recipe using two wood and one sap, and a trio of them have the possibility of showing up in the Recycling Machine after it finishes processing a Soggy Newspaper.

While torches are easily found or made and can be used to illuminate both indoor and outdoor areas, plopping them all over the ground or floor is not the prettiest lighting option available in the game. Fortunately, Reddit user kellsipeth has found a more visually pleasing way to display them, discovering by accident that they could place torches on top of fence posts. Utilizing this method, a player could conceivably cast rings of light all over a farm without randomly dropping torches everywhere, eliminating the need for wearing one of Stardew Valley's rings that casts a halo of light around the wearer.

Stardew Valley Player Finds a Prettier Way to Use Torches

While a lot of players seem pleased with the discovery, some have offered other tips for making a farm look better at night. One player suggested hiding torches behind tree trunks in Stardew Valley, a trick that can also be used to help players navigate Cindersap Forest at night without the aid of a Glow Ring. Another suggested swapping out torches for jack-o-lanterns, although they cast light over a much smaller area and can't be obtained until late Fall of Year 1. Still, another suggested using the fence post method to light up Pelican Town, while one more noted that torches can also be placed atop sprinklers to keep crops illuminated.

The discovery should give players something to do as they wait for the big Stardew Valley Update 1.6 to come to consoles and mobile, as its launch on those platforms has been delayed for unknown reasons related to porting it to systems other than PC. The delay associated with the ports has also affected developer ConcernedApe's next project, Haunted Chocolatier, as he's had to shelf its progress to work on getting Update 1.6 running on all platforms that support Stardew Valley.
