Almost 8 years after its original release on PC, Stardew Valley remains one of the most popular indie titles available today. The farming simulation RPG has only grown in the years following its release, adding new content and building an audience of diehard fans. Stardew Valley is filled with experiences and items, from the extraordinary to the mundane. When it comes to Stardew Valley forage items, they don't get much more mundane than the humble Leek. Most players will collect a Leek within their first few days on the farm, but the wild vegetable is more useful than it may seem.

Updated September 12, 2024 by Renri Seong: As of March 2024, ConcernedApe has released the 1.6 update for Stardew Valley. New features include the Desert Festival, the Green Rain weather, and more. With the update, Stardew has welcomed returning players as well as newcomers. One of the many things you can do in Stardew Valley is forage items. The items will change depending on the season, but Spring is the only time you can obtain Leeks. These vegetables can be tricky to find and require you to look in specific areas in the valley. However, you'll want to search for them once you've accepted the "Gifts for George" special order.

Foraging Leeks in Stardew Valley

Search the Mountains and the Bus Stop

Leeks are wild vegetables, which means they can't be farmed in Stardew Valley. Therefore, the only ways to get Leeks are through Foraging or the use of Spring Wild Seeds. Leeks can only be foraged in the Spring, and only from four different locations on the Stardew Valley map. Leeks are gathered with the Foraging skill, and harvesting them will be made easier by the Gatherer, Botanist, and Tracker professions.

You can find Leeks in the following locations:

58% of the forageable vegetables in these areas will be Leeks in the Spring, with only a 20% chance in the Bus Stop and Rail Road areas, and 25% in the Forest Farm.

Other Ways to Obtain Leeks

The only other way to get Leeks is through planting Spring Wild Seeds, which have a 25% chance of growing into a Leek. Spring Seeds can also be crafted by combining the four wild vegetables of the season: Wild Horseradish, Leek, Daffodil, and Dandelion. You'll also receive x30 Spring Seeds by completing the Spring Foraging Bundle at the Community Center. However, you're likely to have completed this in your first year. Thus, it's better to save them for Spring Year 2+ when you can start accepting special orders.

What are Leeks for in Stardew Valley

Should You Save Leeks or Sell Them?

Stardew Valley Emilys Room

You'll want to get your hands on Leeks for a few reasons. Certain quests require Leeks, you'll need one for the Spring Foraging Bundle, and you can use them in recipes. Leeks can also be placed in the Sewing Machine to make clothing. To better showcase exactly what Leeks are used for, here's a look at everything you can do with it:

Recipes

  • Leeks are only used in the Salad recipe. The Salad restores 113 energy and 50 health; they're sold for 110g. The Salad is also a Loved Gift for Leah, so you can give one to her to boost your affection.
  • Leeks are also used to make Wild Seeds (Sp). Combining the ingredients together will reward players with x10 Spring Seeds, which, when planted, will yield a random Horseradish, Dandelion, Daffodil, or Leek. These packs can also be sold for around 35g each, and are a universally Disliked gift.

Gifting Leeks

  • Players can gift Leeks to many of the NPCs found around Stardew Valley but only a handful truly appreciate the vegetable. Leeks are one of George's Loved Gifts. They are classified as Liked Gifts for Penny, Leah, Harvey, and Linus. Anyone not listed consider Leeks a Neutral Gift or a Disliked/Hated Gift.

Quests & Bundles

  • Leeks are required for the Spring Foraging Bundle in the Crafts Room.
  • During year two, Evelyn will request the player send her a Leek by mail, on the 15th of Spring.
  • A Leek may sometimes be required to complete one of the Spring-themed Help Wanted boards outside of Pierre's General Store.
  • Evelyn will also ask the player to provide her with 12 Leeks as part of the Special Order, "Gifts for George."

How to Complete

It's highly recommended you take the "Gifts for George" special order. This will start appearing on the bulletin board outside Lewis' house in Year 2. If you don't see it during your second year of Spring, you'll have to look again in Year 3. The goal of "Gifts for George" is to forage 12 Leeks and place them on the stove in Evelyn and George's house. "Gifts for George" has a 28-day deadline, but only if you manage to grab it on Spring 1. The quest can appear at the beginning, middle, or last week of the month. If you accept it during week 2, then you'll have less than 28 days to complete it.

It should also be noted that you need to have "Gifts for George" active in order for the Leeks you forage to count towards the quest. Any Leek you gather before this quest will not count.

The best way to gather a dozen Leeks for the quest is to search the mountains and Bus Stop area every day. You can even look around the area next to the bridge leading to the Quarry. If you're struggling to gather Leeks, craft Wild Seeds (Sp) and plant them. While the items that sprout from Wild Seeds are randomized, you have a slight chance of getting at least one-two Leeks if you plant 10 or more of them.

You can hasten the growth of Wild Seeds by using Deluxe Speed-Gro, which can be bought from Pierre (Year 2+) for 150g. You can also get this fertilizer from Sandy at the Oasis for 80g. She only has the Deluxe Speed-Gro on Thursdays, but it's significantly cheaper than Pierre's stock.

As a reward for "Gifts for George," Evelyn will send you a Coffee Machine in the mail the following day. Place this furniture anywhere in your house, and it will make x1 Coffee every day. Coffee doesn't restore much HP or Energy (1HP and 3 Energy respectively), but it gives you a +1 Speed Boost for 1m 23sec. Coffee is also a Loved Gift for Harvey, and a universally Liked Gift to all characters except Jas, Vincent, and Leo.
