Summary

  • David Jaffe praises Starfield's narrative as one of the best in gaming history.
  • Starfield's New Game Plus mode has a unique effect on the narrative, resulting in something unique.
  • Jaffe has been praising Starfield ever since its launch.

God of War game director David Jaffe has come in with some high praise for Bethesda's controversial 2023 RPG, Starfield. Jaffe has long been a positive voice for Starfield, voicing his enjoyment of the title ever since its launch.

When Starfield was released in late 2023, it proved controversial with many gamers. Many felt it had too much repetitive, generated content and didn't have the scale expected from a game set in outer space. One particular sticking point was Starfield's loading screens, which felt extremely "last-gen," especially when compared to many of its competitors in the space exploration genre. Even with Bethesda continuing to update the game long after its launch, Starfield has struggled to shake the reputation it acquired at launch.

David Jaffe, who worked as the game director of God of War, has come to the defense of Starfield on X, describing Bethesda's RPG as "one of the best single player narratives in gaming ever. Perhaps THE Best IMO." It's high praise, especially coming from someone of Jaffe's credentials. The narrative was one area that consistently came in for praise, especially with how Starfield's New Game Plus mode affected it on repeat playthroughs. The result was something truly different from other single-player stories, and it's easy to see why someone who works in the industry would have a unique respect for this kind of ambition.

God of War Director Calls Starfield "One of the Best Single-Player Narratives"

It isn't the first time Jaffe has spoken out in favor of Starfield. Just after its release, Jaffe described Starfield as one of his favorite games of all time. It seems that in the period since, his stance on the game has remained exactly the same, and it's cool to see him championing Starfield even if his views don't align with how many gamers feel. After all, it's an inherently subjective medium.

What 2025 will hold for Starfield remains to be seen. Bethesda is still releasing updates for the game, although the lukewarm reception to last year's Shattered Space DLC did little to help Starfield's overall reception from gamers. The developer has yet to reveal whether there will be more DLC for the game, so gamers will have to remain patient to see if they're getting more Starfield in the near future.
